Light-activated tattoos are no longer just a laboratory idea: photochromic Magic Ink has been marketed, and a small human pilot study has reported that it can switch from nearly colorless to visible under ultraviolet light. But the pigment stays in the skin when the design is switched off. Evidence so far comes from 11 people and does not establish long-term safety or performance.
Can tattoos be turned on and off with light?
Magic Ink uses photochromic, nano-engineered pigment that changes its optical state in response to light. In the 2026 study, the pigment appeared nearly imperceptible when deactivated and became magenta and visible after ultraviolet (UV) activation. The inventor describes UV light as switching the design on and visible light as switching it off. The ink is not removed from the body during either change.
“Rewritable” describes this change in appearance, not erasure of the tattoo or a guarantee that a wearer can freely redraw it. Activation and deactivation depend on the ink and its intended light source; the available product information describes a dedicated device rather than confirming compatibility with any generic UV lamp or flashlight.
What does the human study show—and what does it not?
McCurdy, Butterfield, Kwon and coauthors published “Clinical evaluation of photochromic nanoparticle tattoo ink” in the Journal of Nanobiotechnology on 2 July 2026; the version of record is dated 23 September 2026. Their paired pilot gave 11 participants matched tattoos using Magic Ink and commercial standard ink. The authors reported no adverse events in either 11-person group, no significant difference in assessed healing symptoms compared with standard ink, and UV-activated visibility after at least one year in vivo. These observations are preliminary, not proof of safety across a population or over decades. A study this small cannot reliably detect uncommon harms, and the authors say safe and sustained translation remains largely untested.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The authors’ conclusion is carefully limited: “These results indicate that photo-rewritable tattoo nanomaterials can function as tolerable intradermal implants over the timescales examined, and support their further evaluation for dynamic or ‘disappearing’ tattoos in medical (e.g., radiotherapy treatment localization and biopsy site marking in dermatology), cosmetic and paramedical (e.g., permanent makeup and micropigmentation), and body art applications.”
The paper also reports preclinical characterization, including third-party sterility and non-cytotoxicity testing, particle sizing and flow properties suited to intradermal delivery, rapid switching, and retention across thousands of switching cycles. Those laboratory results do not establish lifetime safety. The authors additionally measured 18.6 ppm formaldehyde in bottles after gamma sterilization, a manufacturing-related finding that should not be generalized to every product or ink batch.

What is Magic Ink, and can you buy it?
Magic Ink is the marketed body-art product associated with inventor Carson J. Bruns. His site says it went onto the market in May 2025 and describes its activation device as patented. HYPRSKN describes a Magic Pen light source for activation and a different wavelength of light for deactivation. No independent comparison establishes whether other light sources work as well, so check the product’s current instructions rather than substituting a generic lamp.
On 8 October 2026, the official store listed a 2 ml bottle for $100 and marked it sold out. Price and stock can change; check the official Magic Ink 2 ml listing for current status. A product listing is not evidence of FDA approval or a guarantee that the ink is available in every country.

How is the medical marker different?
HYPRSKN separately describes Magic Mark, a trial-stage medical application intended for radiotherapy alignment marks that could be switched off outside treatment. This is a company-described application under trial, not established clinical practice or evidence of regulatory clearance. It should not be confused with the marketed body-art ink.
How does light deactivation differ from tattoo removal?
Switching photochromic ink to a low-visibility state conceals its appearance; it does not fragment or remove pigment. Conventional laser removal has a different goal: a health professional uses laser treatment to break down tattoo pigment. The U.S. FDA says removal commonly takes multiple sessions and may not remove a tattoo completely. It advises that laser removal be performed by or under the supervision of a health professional; removal creams and DIY kits are not FDA-approved and may cause rashes, burns or scars.

What are the safety and regulatory limits?
Magic Ink’s small pilot does not erase the ordinary risks associated with tattooing. The U.S. FDA classifies inks used in intradermal tattoos as cosmetics under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, while tattooing practice and parlour safety are generally handled by local jurisdictions. The agency says no color additives are approved for injection into skin. This is not the same as a finding that a particular photochromic ink is safe or approved for injection.
FDA-listed potential harms include infection, allergic reactions, granulomas, keloids, increased sunburn, redness or scarring, swelling or burning, MRI complications and problems with removal. Sealed ink can still be contaminated, and long-term effects of tattoo pigments and contaminants remain uncertain. As the FDA puts it: “There’s no surefire way to tell if the ink is safe without testing.” FDA guidance is U.S.-specific; people elsewhere should check their local rules.
