Maestro is most compelling as a portrait of a marriage lived in the shadow of extraordinary talent: Bradley Cooper’s formally daring 2023 film follows Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein across decades, rather than attempting a comprehensive account of Bernstein’s career. Its conducting scenes have sweep and urgency; its quieter scenes ask what that public life cost the family around him. The result is an impressive, sometimes uneven biopic whose strongest moments feel genuinely transporting.
What is Maestro about?
Directed by Cooper, who also plays Bernstein, and written by Cooper and Josh Singer, Maestro centers on Bernstein and Felicia, an actress, and their complicated lifelong partnership. Netflix calls it a fearless love story; that description captures the film’s organizing idea. Bernstein’s career matters, but the movie is less a cradle-to-grave survey of his work than a relationship drama shaped by the demands of his fame, ambitions and private life. Carey Mulligan plays Felicia, with Matt Bomer also among the stars.
The film’s scope is decades-long, and its treatment of Bernstein’s relationships with men while married to Felicia is part of that story. It does not reduce their marriage to a single label or neatly resolve its contradictions. Instead, it returns to the interplay of love, family, hurt and public identity. TIME’s discussion of the film’s open-marriage scenes offers one interpretation of that material, not a definitive account of the marriage: TIME on Maestro and its marriage scenes.
How does the film work as a piece of cinema?
A bold shift in tone and image
The black-and-white opening gives the film an immediate, composed formality. When color arrives later, the change registers as more than decoration: it opens the visual texture of the film as the story moves through time and into different kinds of intimacy. The shift helps make a life spanning decades feel like a sequence of emotional and artistic chapters, rather than a parade of dates.

Public spectacle, private strain
Cooper is most galvanizing when Bernstein is conducting. The gestures, concentration and physical scale of the performances turn musical work into screen action, giving the film its surges of exhilaration. But Maestro does not stay on the podium. Its later emphasis on the family complicates the initial glamour, and the contrast is essential to the film’s argument: the same force that makes Bernstein a magnetic public figure can make private life difficult to contain.
That transition is also where the film can feel less assured. Associated Press writer Jake Coyle called it a “high wire act of a biopic,” praising the experimental black-and-white opening while finding the increasingly complex family dynamics later on a tougher stretch. That is one critic’s response, not a consensus verdict, but it names the film’s central balancing act well: formal daring and vivid set pieces have to carry a story that keeps changing shape.

What do Cooper and Mulligan bring to the roles?
Cooper’s Bernstein is a performance of energy and display, but it also has to make room for the moments when that display stops working as a shield. The conducting passages make his physical command legible; the domestic scenes test how much more complicated he is than the public image. Mulligan’s Felicia is not simply a witness to that image. She gives the film a second center of gravity, making the relationship feel like a meeting of distinct people rather than a supporting chapter in a famous man’s life.
Both actors received Academy Award nominations in lead categories, alongside the film’s nominations for Best Picture, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Sound. Netflix Tudum also reports seven BAFTA nominations. These are nominations, not evidence of wins; they indicate the range of the film’s awards recognition without settling its artistic merits.

How closely does Maestro follow history?
The 1943 Philharmonic breakthrough
The film’s account of Bernstein’s New York Philharmonic breakthrough is dramatically sharpened. It depicts him taking over at short notice for ailing conductor Bruno Walter without rehearsal. TIME contrasts that staging with the historical account it discusses: Bernstein had been preparing in case he was needed. The scene can still be thrilling as cinema, but its surprise should not be mistaken for a literal record of an entirely unprepared substitute stepping in. See TIME’s account of Bernstein’s debut and the film’s version.
Music as period and mood
Near the end, the film uses R.E.M.’s “It’s The End of The World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine),” released in 1987. The song is a conspicuous choice that places the scene in Bernstein’s later life and gives it a distinctly contemporary pulse. Its presence is a musical and editorial choice, not proof of a specific historical event. TIME discusses the song’s placement in its coverage of Maestro.

Is Maestro worth watching?
Watch it for Cooper’s commitment to form, the vivid conducting sequences and the tension between Bernstein’s public stature and the life he shared with Felicia. It is less satisfying if what you want is a systematic account of Bernstein’s compositions and career, or a consistently even family drama. Some critical responses have praised the performances while questioning whether the story feels fully developed; Rotten Tomatoes’ returned review excerpts reflect that divergence, not a complete or permanent measure of opinion. The movie’s achievements are real, but they do not erase the unevenness of its later stretch.
Netflix lists the film as rated R and running 2 hours 11 minutes. Netflix and Amblin identify Netflix as its streaming destination; availability can vary by country and change over time. Netflix’s film information also points viewers toward the soundtrack. For a documentary-minded viewer, the best approach is to take Maestro as an interpretive relationship portrait: emotionally ambitious and often rapturous, but not a substitute for a fully sourced biography of Bernstein.
