Magda Szubanski disclosed stage four mantle cell lymphoma in May 2025. By February 2026, she had completed chemotherapy and announced that she was in remission—while stressing that remission is not a cure. In an October 2026 interview, ABC still described her as in remission. She has also spoken about the emotional and physical help she felt from the support that came her way.
What happened to Magda Szubanski?
On 29 May 2025, ABC reported that Szubanski had disclosed stage four mantle cell lymphoma and begun treatment. She said the treatment was rough but that she remained hopeful, and that she was receiving care in Melbourne. ABC News reported on her diagnosis and initial treatment.
Her diagnosis was also discussed by Associate Professor Melita Kenealy, the haematologist-oncologist identified by Cabrini as Szubanski’s treating specialist. In Cabrini’s account, Kenealy said Szubanski had felt unwell for some time and knew something was wrong. Cabrini’s September 2026 account describes her care and her conversations with friends and her doctor.
Is Magda Szubanski in remission?
Yes. On 27 February 2026, Szubanski said she had completed chemotherapy and was in remission. She also made clear that remission did not mean she was cured: she hoped it would keep the cancer at bay for a long time. ABC News reported her announcement and her qualification.
