Video coverage showed Costa land a right hand that sent Paul to the canvas, after which the pair continued with grappling. The available reporting does not medically confirm that Paul was unconscious, so “knocked out cold” goes beyond what the footage and contemporary accounts establish.
Where and when the sparring session took place
MMA Fighting reported on March 10, 2020, that Paul visited the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas the preceding weekend and sparred with Costa, who was in town ahead of UFC 248. The event included Israel Adesanya’s fight with Yoel Romero. MMA Fighting’s report describes Costa as a top-ranked middleweight contender at the time.
This was training, not a sanctioned bout: there was no official fight result or winner.
What the video accounts say happened
Contemporary coverage describes the men exchanging punches before Costa landed a right hand that put Paul on the canvas. They then moved on to grappling drills. Men’s Health, recounting Paul’s video, said Paul got up, asked how he had done, and continued with an MMA exchange. Its account is a description of the clip, not an independent medical assessment. Men’s Health’s account also transcribed Paul joking about being matched with Costa while headgear was placed on him.

The most precise description is that a sparring video showed Costa landing a punch that sent Paul to the canvas, followed by grappling.
