It Ends with Us is the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s 2016 novel. Sony describes the film as based on Hoover’s work, and Netflix calls it an adaptation. The story addresses domestic abuse and generational trauma; the changes below concern how the story was shaped for film, not a guide to responding to abuse. Sony Pictures’ film page and Netflix Tudum’s overview identify the relationship between the two works.
What did Justin Baldoni say he changed?
Recovered memories replace the book’s access to Lily’s inner life
Baldoni said the film uses Lily’s recovered memories as a narrative backbone, calling that approach a departure from the novel. In a Good Morning America interview, he explained: “You don’t have the luxury of going into her mind and understanding or seeing this romance unfold the way it unfolds in the book.” He said the departure was intended “to protect Lily and to also show what so many women experience.” Those are Baldoni’s stated reasons for the adaptation choice.
The distinction is structural: a novel can present Lily’s inner experience directly, while the film organizes her story through memories returning to her. The change affects how viewers receive information about her past and present; it is not simply a matter of cutting scenes.

Why were details condensed or changed?
Hoover’s explanation: keep the story moving as a film
Hoover told E! News that adaptation requires changes: “With every adaptation, things have to change.” She added: “You’re trying to condense this whole storyline into a film, so there were some changes to make the flow better.” That explanation comes from the author, and is distinct from Baldoni’s account of the film’s memory-based structure. Atlas’s restaurant changes from Bib’s to Root
In the novel, Atlas’s restaurant is called Bib’s; in the film, it is Root. Hoover said the change allowed the film to connect the restaurant to a childhood conversation. She explained that there was less time to build the related moment as the book does, so the adaptation preserved an emotional connection by a different route.

The characters’ ages were adjusted
TIME reports that Lily is 23 and Ryle 30 in the novel, while the film ages the principal characters. The article quotes Hoover saying the film corrected the ages to make them more realistic for the characters’ life circumstances. This is a reported adaptation detail and Hoover’s stated rationale, not a reason attributed to Baldoni. TIME’s comparison discusses the age change.
Which book material is reduced or altered?
Ellen DeGeneres and Finding Nemo references
TIME reports that Ellen DeGeneres is a recurring reference in the novel, connected to Lily’s journaling and her bond with Atlas. The film substantially reduces that material. The comparison coverage describes what changed; it does not establish Baldoni’s explanation for the reduction.

Secondary scenes and disclosures
CinemaBlend’s comparison reports several other differences: where some encounters between Ryle and Lily take place, which character tells Lily about Emerson, whether Lily stays with Atlas, and when Atlas sees Lily’s tattoo. These changes affect individual scenes and disclosures, rather than the central adaptation choice Baldoni described. The report details them in its book-and-film comparison.
Some defining details remain
Hoover said Lily’s heart tattoo made it into the film. She also said the ending was retained “almost word for word,” describing the broad preservation of that conclusion even as scene-level details differ.

Is the ending exactly the same?
Not in every detail. Hoover’s comment that the ending stayed “almost word for word” describes how closely the film kept the ending overall. Separately, CinemaBlend reports a changed final exchange and less use of the novel’s “just keep swimming” motif. Those statements can coexist: the film may preserve the ending’s broad emotional destination while altering the precise words and some of the book’s surrounding context. The comparison report does not make Hoover’s description a claim that every line is identical.
Should you read the novel before watching?
Either order works, but the novel offers a different way into Lily’s experience: it can stay closer to her interior life, while the film uses recovered memories as its organizing structure. Reading the book first makes it easier to notice the condensed references and changed scenes; watching first lets the novel’s details arrive without a scene-by-scene checklist.
