Yes: David Koepp was attached to write the fourth Jurassic World film when TheWrap reported its development on January 22, 2024. That project became Jurassic World Rebirth, directed by Gareth Edwards and released in theaters on July 2, 2025. The “Jurassic World 4” label was an early news shorthand, not the released film’s title.
What the January 2024 report said
TheWrap reported on January 22, 2024, citing studio sources, that Universal was developing a fourth Jurassic World film and that David Koepp would write the screenplay. The report described a storyline separate from the trilogy starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, while noting that plot details had not been disclosed. TheWrap’s development report is the source for that original announcement.
Koepp had written the screenplay for the 1993 Jurassic Park and its 1997 sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park. His return connected the new project to the franchise’s earlier films, but the 2024 report did not establish that it would continue the previous trilogy’s storyline.
What the project became
Universal later identified the film as Jurassic World Rebirth, with Koepp as screenwriter and Edwards as director. It opened in theaters on July 2, 2025. The January 2024 development news is therefore a past milestone; the film is no longer merely a project in development. NBCUniversal’s film guide lists the release date, credits and official synopsis.

What Jurassic World Rebirth is about
The official synopsis places the story five years after Jurassic World Dominion. Dinosaurs largely remain in isolated equatorial environments, and genetic material from three especially large creatures may help produce a drug with significant benefits for humanity. Covert operations expert Zora Bennett leads the extraction mission. It collides with the ordeal of a civilian family whose boat is capsized by aquatic dinosaurs, leaving them stranded with the team on a forbidden island that once housed a Jurassic Park research facility.
Scarlett Johansson plays Zora Bennett, Mahershala Ali plays Duncan Kincaid, and Jonathan Bailey plays paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis. Rupert Friend and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo also appear. Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley produced the film; Steven Spielberg, Denis L. Stewart and Jim Spencer were executive producers. Universal’s official guide and May 2025 announcement provide the credits and synopsis.

Koepp’s approach to the franchise
The Associated Press reported that Koepp drew up nine principles for the franchise while writing Rebirth. Among the ideas AP highlighted were “humor is oxygen” and treating dinosaurs as animals rather than monsters. AP also described Koepp’s aim to reorder the franchise and noted the story’s concentration of dinosaurs around the equator, an element also reflected in Universal’s synopsis.
Edwards said he hoped the film would evoke a sequel to the original Jurassic Park from the 1990s, while recognizing the difficulty of matching Spielberg’s film. The remark appears in NBCUniversal’s guide. For additional reporting on Koepp’s creative principles and comments from the filmmakers, see the Associated Press coverage.
