Hank and Peggy Hill spent years in Saudi Arabia so Hank could earn money for their retirement. When they returned to Arlen, they found a hometown—and a world—that had changed while they were gone. The move gives the revival both its plot explanation and its central story device: Hank has to navigate a culture he no longer recognizes.
Why did Hank and Peggy move to Saudi Arabia?
The revival’s launch synopsis says Hank took a propane job in Saudi Arabia to build a retirement nest egg for himself and Peggy. The Associated Press reported that his title was “assistant manager in charge of Arabian propane and Arabian propane accessories.” After years away, the couple returned to Arlen to reconnect with Dale, Boomhauer, and Bill. The AP’s report on the revival describes the setup and the Hills’ return.

That is the in-story reason: Hank’s overseas work was a way to save for retirement. It is separate from the creators’ reason for choosing the move.
Why did the revival make the Hills leave Arlen?
The Saudi Arabia years create a time jump without requiring the characters to age in step with the real-world gap between the original series and its revival. Showrunner Saladin K. Patterson told TheWrap, “They baked into this revival that Hank and Peggy had been away in Saudi Arabia for the past 10 years and now they’re coming back to America.” He said Hank’s familiar outlook makes him a fish out of water when he returns to a changed society. Patterson’s interview with TheWrap explains how the time away serves the story.

The gap makes Bobby an adult
The years abroad also help account for Bobby’s new stage of life. The AP reported that he is 21 in the revival and runs a “down home, German-Asian fusion” restaurant. Hulu’s current description presents him as an entrepreneur dealing with the stresses of running a business. Hulu’s series page describes the family after their return, rather than repeating the launch synopsis about Saudi Arabia.
Arlen changed while Hank was away
Co-creator Greg Daniels described the idea of placing the family on an Aramco base as a way to keep them in an idealized American environment while they missed changes happening elsewhere. He called it “the most Mayberry kind of freezer” and an “idealized kind of white-picket-fence America.” Mike Judge added, “A lot has happened in the world since the original run of the show ended. There’s just a lot more for Hank to complain about.” GamesRadar+ reports the creators’ comments about the setting and the changed world.

Was Saudi Arabia always part of the revival plan?
Patterson told Parade that Mike Judge and Greg Daniels had decided on the Saudi Arabia backstory and on aging Bobby up before Patterson joined them to work on the first episode. He described the revival as something that took shape through years of change and development, not as a response to one specific event. As he put it, “I can’t say that there was necessarily one incident that was an impetus to say, ‘Okay, gotta do it now.’” His Parade interview gives his account of the creative decisions.

By the time the revival begins, Hank and Peggy have retired and are back on Rainey Street in Arlen; Bobby is building a life as a business owner. Hulu’s current series description focuses on that present-day setup, while the launch synopsis explains the years abroad that led to it. Season 14 premiered on August 4, 2025, on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+, according to Disney’s platform guide. Hulu says all seasons are available to stream on Hulu.
