KISS welcomed its selection for the 2025 Kennedy Center Honors, saying the band was “deeply honored.” The acceptance came after Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons had publicly criticized Donald Trump on specific occasions, but the band’s comments about the honor praised its recognition and legacy—not a political position.
What KISS said about the honor
After the 2025 class was announced, Gene Simmons said: “KISS is the embodiment of the American dream. We are deeply honored to receive the Kennedy Center Honor.” Paul Stanley said he accepted the recognition “on behalf of the long legacy of KISS and all of the band members who helped create our iconic band.” TMZ reported the members’ responses on August 13, 2025.

The official recognition is the Kennedy Center Honors, an annual celebration of performing artists’ lifetime contributions to American culture. KISS was named alongside George Strait, Michael Crawford, Gloria Gaynor, and Sylvester Stallone. CBS and Paramount’s announcement identifies the KISS honorees as Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss, and Ace Frehley.
What criticism of Trump preceded the acceptance?
The clearest contrast involves Stanley. In 2020, he objected to Trump’s claim that an election loss would mean the election was rigged, calling the claim “incendiary & abhorrent.” After the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, Stanley condemned the participants and called them “TERRORISTS.” The Independent’s August 15, 2025 report recounts those remarks. The same report says Simmons criticized Trump in a 2022 interview.

- KISS THE VERY BEST OF KISS
These are statements attributed to Stanley and Simmons; they do not establish that every member of KISS shared the same political views. Nor do the members’ remarks about receiving the honor explain the political meaning they assign to accepting it. They expressed gratitude for the recognition and the band’s history.
When the Honors took place—and how Ace Frehley was represented
The honorees received their medals on December 6, 2025, and the ceremony took place the following day. Ace Frehley, one of the KISS members recognized, died on October 16, 2025, before either event. His daughter, Monique, represented him at the medal presentation; his recognition was posthumous. The U.S. Government Publishing Office transcript records the December 6 Honors dinner and attendance context, while the Associated Press report covers the medal presentation.

Why the acceptance drew attention
The contrast is between Stanley’s earlier criticism of Trump and KISS’s later acceptance of a cultural honor presented during Trump’s presidency. The available acceptance statements thank the Kennedy Center and recognize KISS’s long legacy; they do not describe the acceptance as an endorsement of Trump or offer a political explanation. Readers can note the contrast without treating the award acceptance as proof of a change in the members’ views.
