Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates met in connection with the film The Big Chill and married in 1989. They have two children and later shared screen credits in Princess Caraboo and The Anniversary Party. Accounts differ on the exact circumstances and year of their first meeting, and the public record does not establish private details about their relationship today.
How Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates met
Their story is linked to The Big Chill, the 1983 film directed by Lawrence Kasdan. A 1997 TIME profile says they met briefly at an early reading of the screenplay, where Cates performed the role later played by Meg Tilly. TV Insider describes the encounter as happening during auditions. A Yahoo result dates a read-through to 1982, while other accounts associate the meeting with 1983.
Because descriptions and dates vary, the most reliable concise account is that they met in connection with The Big Chill; a more specific setting or year should be attributed to the source that reports it. TIME also recounts that Kline hired Cates’s former personal assistant, who was asked to arrange a date with Cates and later became Kline’s agent. That is the profile’s account of how their courtship began, not a verified first-person explanation from either actor.
When they married and what is publicly known about their family
Kline and Cates married in 1989. TIME’s September 1997 profile says the wedding took place three weeks before Kline won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for A Fish Called Wanda; a 2000 Irish America interview also gives 1989 as their marriage year. The sources establish the year, not an independently confirmed wedding date.

What Phoebe Cates did after stepping back from film acting
TV Insider describes Cates as moving away from film acting to focus on family and business, and reports that she opened the New York boutique Blue Tree in 2005. This is a later career development, not proof that marriage alone determined her professional choices.
