Her account was a personal recollection—not a confirmed clinical diagnosis—and she also relayed observations she said Philbin’s wife, Joy, had shared with her.
What Gifford said about Philbin’s mood
During an appearance on The Talk, reported by TheWrap on October 2, 2020, Gifford said Philbin had been depressed before his death because of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. “He had been depressed in the weeks and months earlier, because of [COVID-19],” she said. She described the restrictions as preventing him from performing or being out among people: “Regis couldn’t perform anywhere, nobody was out and about. He couldn’t be Regis for people, and it broke his heart.” TheWrap’s report and quoted remarks
Gifford also said a close friend of Philbin’s had recently died of COVID-19. Her explanation linked his reported sadness to pandemic isolation, the loss of his usual opportunities to entertain, and bereavement.
What Gifford said Joy Philbin had observed
Gifford relayed that Joy had told her Regis had stopped laughing, lost interest in things, and did not really want to eat. Those observations come through Gifford’s account of what Joy told her; they are not an independently reported clinical assessment. AP Archive’s description of the interview

Gifford recalled that the Philbins came to her home for lunch a few weeks before Regis died. The archive presents this as Gifford recounting Joy’s words, rather than as a direct interview with Joy.
How this account differs from the official death information
Gifford’s comments describe how she understood Philbin’s mood and what she said Joy had observed. They do not establish a formal diagnosis of depression or show that his mood caused his death. Philbin died in July 2020 at age 88. Fox News reported that Connecticut’s Chief Medical Examiner’s Office attributed his death to heart disease and classified it as natural.
