In Nandini Ramnath’s September 4, 2025 review for Scroll.in, the series’ main appeal is Antonio’s patient, forensic investigation—not a sprawling ensemble of equally weighted stories.
What is Kammatam about?
Rubber-estate owner Samuel dies, and inspector Antonio George arrives at a scene where some people would prefer that the death be treated as an accident. A clue points toward a possible perpetrator, but that person is also found dead. Antonio and his team must widen the investigation, following connections around Samuel’s household and his property-backed borrowing from a cooperative bank.
The review identifies bank clerk Sarath, board member Pappan, employee Francis and Samuel’s son Ebin among the people under suspicion. The mystery develops through the investigation of these relationships and the clues that connect them.
Why the investigation drives the series
Ramnath describes Kammatam as a gripping example of the police-procedural tradition. Antonio’s strengths are close observation, listening and the ability to link details that initially seem unrelated. The pleasure, in her reading, comes from watching a methodical inquiry take shape rather than from treating every character as the center of a separate storyline.

“This faith in a forensic approach has carried over to web series, of which Kammatam is a gripping exemplar,” Ramnath writes in her Scroll review. That is her critical judgment, and it captures the quality she considers the series’ defining strength: the steady work of examining evidence and following leads.
The themes beneath the case
The investigation also opens onto the loyalties and power dynamics surrounding Samuel. Ramnath points to misguided loyalties and a feudal relationship between masters and servants as themes in the series. These tensions give the police inquiry a social dimension: the people around the case are connected not only by suspicion, but also by household and institutional hierarchies.

For viewers drawn to procedural mysteries built around careful police work, Kammatam has a clear point of appeal: Antonio’s persistence and attention to detail anchor a six-episode investigation that grows from one death into a wider web of suspicion. Ramnath’s review is especially positive about that focused approach, while also noting the themes of loyalty and hierarchy woven into the case.
