Students had spent months trying to persuade him to come. Their #BaconToPayson campaign included a Footloose movie night and a student musical. They also renamed the school’s annual Mr. Payson pageant “Mr. Bacon,” the Los Angeles Times reported.
The effort culminated in a prom built around the film that connected the school to Bacon’s career. “It’s great to see that kind of commitment to anything. I also think that it’s amazing to see the power that this movie has had to bring people together,” Bacon said at the event, as reported by the Associated Press.

How did the visit connect to charity?
The campaign was linked to SixDegrees, Bacon’s charity. Students agreed to help prepare 5,000 care packages for the organization. The AP reported that students wrote messages for recipients and worked with SixDegrees and the Utah Film Commission to raise funds and gather toiletries, clothing and other items.
Payson High principal Jesse Sorenson estimated that about 700 students and 300 community members helped fill the bags, according to the AP. That is Sorenson’s reported estimate, not an independently verified attendance count. “It’s something they can be proud of, and it’s fun for them,” he said.

Why was Payson High significant to Footloose?
The school was one of the places used to film the 1984 movie, in which Bacon starred as Ren McCormack, a teenager who challenges a town’s ban on dancing. Returning to the school for a prom themed around the film gave the campaign a direct link to the story students wanted to celebrate.
