During rehearsals for his 2023 coronation, King Charles joked that he had “sausage fingers” as Prince William handled a clasp on his robe. The exchange appeared in the BBC documentary Charles III: The Coronation Year; it was a self-deprecating remark, not a medical explanation.
What did King Charles say about sausage fingers?
While William was fastening a small clasp on his father’s robe, he joked that it might not fasten on the day of the coronation. Charles laughed and replied: “No, you haven’t got sausage fingers like mine.” Sky News reported the exchange on 22 December 2023, attributing the scene and quotation to footage from the documentary.
The line was a joke prompted by the fiddly robe clasp. Calling it a formal “admission” would overstate the moment: Charles was joking with William, not offering a medical account.
Which documentary showed the exchange?
The footage appeared in the BBC documentary Charles III: The Coronation Year. Sky News said at the time that the programme was scheduled to air on Boxing Day, 26 December 2023. That date was the original planned broadcast date reported in 2023; it does not establish whether or where the programme can be watched now.

Does the joke explain the appearance of Charles’s fingers?
No. The quip does not establish a cause or diagnosis. The Associated Press reported that speculation had circulated about the King’s swollen-looking fingers, but that the reason remained unexplained. The AP account distinguishes that uncertainty from the public discussion; the documentary joke should not be treated as medical evidence.

A sample from a Penguin Random House UK book recounts a separate, earlier instance: a letter Charles wrote after William’s birth describing the baby as having “sausage fingers just like mine.” The book passage provides historical context for the phrase, but it is not the source of the coronation-rehearsal exchange and says nothing about a medical cause.
