The story centers on a mother-daughter bond shaped by addiction, separation, and loss. Cole described making the film as a way to revisit those experiences and process her grief. In an interview about the film, as reproduced by Yahoo, she said, “This is like my way of making peace with a lot of things.” People’s interview, syndicated by Yahoo, provides that quote.
Who plays Frankie Lons, and who made the film?
Cole plays herself, while Debbi Morgan portrays Lons. Swirl Films’ March 8, 2023 announcement identifies D’Angela Proctor and Manu Boyer as directors and Angelica Cheri as screenwriter. It says Swirl Films and Big Dreams produced the film for Lifetime. Cole served as executive producer, and Ron Fair was a co-executive producer and music supervisor. What happened to Keyshia Cole’s mother?
Frankie Lons died in 2021. The Swirl Films announcement describes her death as an accidental opioid overdose and says it occurred on her 61st birthday. A contemporaneous People report, syndicated by Yahoo, identifies fentanyl as the substance and gives the date as July 18, 2021. The more specific fentanyl attribution belongs to that report; the two accounts do not use identical wording. The syndicated report includes the date and substance detail.
When did the biopic premiere?
Keyshia Cole: This Is My Story premiered Saturday, June 24, 2023, at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT on Lifetime, as part of the network’s Black Music Month programming. That is the original premiere date, not a current broadcast schedule. Swirl Films’ announcement gives the premiere time.
Does the film include new music?
The production announcement confirms that Cole recorded a new song for the film, “Forever is a Thing.” Fair supervised the music, and Warryn Campbell composed the original score. The announcement does not establish that a soundtrack album was released.
