Kate Beckinsale sued producers associated with the 2024 action thriller Canary Black, alleging that unsafe working conditions during filming caused serious injuries, including trauma to her left knee. The allegations have not been proven in court. In court papers reported in January 2026, the defendants denied liability and argued that Beckinsale’s own negligence caused or contributed to her injuries.

What does Beckinsale allege happened on the Canary Black set?

In a complaint described by The Guardian on June 12, 2025 and Us Weekly on June 11, 2025, Beckinsale alleges that the production’s schedule, preparation and support were unsafe. The film shoot began in Croatia in September 2022, according to The Guardian’s report.

  • Long workdays: The complaint alleges Beckinsale routinely worked days of about 15 hours.
  • Preparation and support: It alleges that requested workout equipment and physical trainers were not provided.
  • Knee injury: The complaint says she sustained a complex meniscus tear in her left knee during a scene in which she was thrown into a wall.
  • Return to filming: Us Weekly reports that Beckinsale returned to set in February 2023 with a surgeon’s notice restricting activities including running, kicking, diving and hanging from a harness. The complaint alleges those restrictions were disregarded and that her injury was aggravated when she was expected to perform action sequences.
  • Stunt coverage: The Guardian says the complaint alleges Beckinsale’s stunt performer broke an ankle and that the production hired a replacement the complaint characterized as unqualified. That characterization is an allegation, not an independently established finding.

Us Weekly reports that the production was delayed for two months after the knee injury. These details are claims described in reporting about the complaint; they are not court findings about what happened or who was responsible.

What do the reported emails say?

The Guardian reported that Beckinsale’s agent, Shani Rosenzweig, emailed producer John Zois with concerns about preparation and the pace of the action shoot. Rosenzweig wrote: “No one is actually taking real action to put a plan in place to fix this situation …”

The Guardian also reported Zois’s reply: “I don’t know what else to say other than you’re right … The days are too packed for the pace we are moving and it’s CLEARLY not sustainable.” The reported exchange was included in the complaint. Zois’s words, as reported, do not by themselves establish legal liability.

The Guardian also attributes this sentence to Rosenzweig in the correspondence: “If you’re trying to kill a person, you’re doing a great job.”

What have the defendants said?

According to MyNewsLA’s January 15, 2026 report, defendants associated with Anton Entertainment, including producer John Zois, filed court papers on January 9 denying liability. They argued that Beckinsale’s own negligence caused or contributed to her injuries. The report describes the defendants as calling the suit “frivolous.” These are the defense’s reported positions, not a ruling resolving the dispute.
