In a Jan. 10, 2025, MSNBC interview with Katy Tur, Jennifer Garner said she had lost a friend in the Palisades fires and felt “almost guilty” walking through her own home while friends and neighbors had lost theirs. She also spoke about helping evacuees through World Central Kitchen. The San Francisco Chronicle and TheWrap reported her comments at the time; this is a retrospective account of that interview, not an update on wildfire conditions.
What Garner said about losing her friend
Garner told Tur, “I did lose a friend. She didn’t get out in time.” She said the loss was tender for her church community and declined to discuss the friend further. The reports did not identify the friend, and there is no basis to speculate about the person’s identity.
The quotation was attributed to Garner’s Jan. 10 interview by contemporaneous reporting from the San Francisco Chronicle and TheWrap.
Why she said walking through her home felt difficult
Garner described the contrast between having a home to return to and seeing friends and neighbors lose theirs. As the Chronicle and TheWrap reported her words, she said, “I feel almost guilty walking through my house.” That was her description of her own feelings in the interview, not a clinical assessment or a claim that everyone affected by a disaster experiences the same reaction.

How Garner said she was helping
The Chronicle reported that Garner reached out to José Andrés to help through World Central Kitchen and quoted her asking, “What can I do? How can I help? What can I offer?” TheWrap reported that she helped distribute food and water to evacuees. The accounts describe relief activity in January 2025; they do not establish her current role or a continuing partnership.
What the figures in her remarks meant
In the early coverage, Garner said she could think of 100 families and referred to 5,000 homes lost. Those were figures in her contemporaneous remarks, quoted by the Chronicle and TheWrap on Jan. 10–11, 2025—not independently verified official counts and not current totals. They convey the scale of loss she was describing at the time, but should not be used as a present-day accounting of fire damage.
