Hewitt said she wanted the storyline to reflect the seriousness of postpartum depression. “I felt a huge responsibility to show the real truth about what happens,” she told Gomez. She also described the arc as personally important because of its relevance to mothers experiencing PPD.
How Maddie and Chimney reunite
Maddie and Chimney encounter each other during an emergency involving Maddie’s friend Tara at a St. Patrick’s Day parade. Hewitt said the reunion’s placement in the middle of a crisis initially surprised her and co-star Kenneth Choi, but made sense once they filmed it: Maddie finds purpose in helping others.

The interview also described the emotional work behind the characters’ first substantial conversation. Hewitt recalled that she and Choi cried during rehearsal for the bench scene in which Maddie explains why she left.
Are Maddie and Chimney back together?
Not simply or immediately. Hewitt characterized their relationship after the reunion as complicated. Maddie has to readjust to life after treatment, and the couple needs time to work through what happened. As Hewitt put it, “Even though Maddie and Chimney see each other, and even though they have the conversation in Boston, I would label Maddie’s social media as ‘relationship status: complicated.’”

What Hewitt said about Maddie’s return to motherhood
Hewitt acknowledged how long Maddie’s absence would feel to viewers. “I hope fans will forgive her for taking that time, because when you say ‘six months away from your child and the person that you love and your family members and the people at the 9-1-1 call center,’ that feels very long.”
She also said that once Maddie has the chance to be a mother again, “being a mom will be first priority.” The interview frames the return as a gradual adjustment, rather than an instant resolution of Maddie and Chimney’s relationship or of the effects of her crisis.
