The cast, including Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha and Aditya Roy Kapur, also spoke about the ensemble and the relationships at the heart of the film.
Why Kalank mattered to Karan Johar
Johar said he and his father, producer Yash Johar, conceived the story in 2003. Yash researched the locations and photographed them, but the project was shelved after his death in 2004. Karan said it carried too many memories for him to continue at the time.
Johar later brought the idea to director Abhishek Varman, who developed it. At the teaser event, Johar called the film a fulfilment of his father’s dream and said, “This film is very emotional as it was my dad’s dream. For me, the film is beyond the box office as it is very special.”
What the teaser suggested about the story
The teaser-era coverage framed Kalank as a pre-Independence story about relationships, lovers separated by circumstance and faith, and revenge that crosses generations. That description reflects what the teaser suggested, rather than a complete account of the film’s plot.

You have to decide after watching the film.” Sonakshi Sinha described the story as “a film about six people, their relationships, what they go through and what changes their lives.”
