Kacey Musgraves announced star-crossed in August 2021 as her fourth studio album, describing it as a 15-song modern-day tragedy in three acts about heartache and healing. The album arrived September 10, 2021, alongside a 50-minute companion film directed by Bardia Zeinali.
When did Kacey Musgraves announce star-crossed?
Announcement coverage appeared August 23, 2021; the official label announcement followed on August 24. Musgraves presented the title track and the film trailer with the announcement. The album was her first new full-length release since Golden Hour (2018) and her fourth studio album at the time. It was released September 10, 2021, through Interscope Records and UMG Nashville. UMG Nashville’s announcement and its release-day notice confirm the dates.
What was the album’s concept?
The label framed star-crossed as a three-act story about heartbreak and recovery, using the shape of a modern-day tragedy. Musgraves reunited with Ian Fitchuk and Daniel Tashian, who had worked with her on Golden Hour. According to the label, the album was recorded in Nashville in just under three weeks.
How does the companion film relate to the album?
star-crossed: the film was released alongside the album as a visual counterpart to its music. Directed by Bardia Zeinali, the 50-minute film was shot in Los Angeles over 10 days, according to the label. Zeinali described the aim as cinematic and heightened while retaining the album’s emotional center: “We wanted it to feel cinematic and epic without compromising the heart and the emotion.”
