Katy Tur and Jacob Soboroff brought a friendship that began in their Los Angeles teenage years to MSNBC Live ’25, where their planned conversation centered on immigration and identity. Their pairing joined personal familiarity with years of shared work at MSNBC and reporting on people affected by immigration policy.
Why were Katy Tur and Jacob Soboroff paired?
The two journalists said they had been friends since they were teenagers and grew up in Los Angeles. In a September 30, 2025, Forbes profile by Mark Joyella, Soboroff described how that relationship continued into their professional lives: “Katie and I have been friends since we were teenagers,” Soboroff told me. “We grew up in Los Angeles together, and to be able to work together for the last 10 years has really been very, truly, honestly, a special experience.”
The profile framed their friendship as lifelong. Soboroff’s “last 10 years” was his recollection of their shared work, not an independently measured career figure. In the profile, he was identified as MSNBC’s senior national and political correspondent; Tur was identified as the host of Katy Tur Reports. Those are the roles reported at the time, in 2025.
What would they discuss at MSNBC Live ’25?
The conversation was planned around immigration and identity, drawing on Tur and Soboroff’s reporting under the current and previous Trump administrations. Rather than promise predictions, Soboroff described the value he hoped to bring as firsthand reporting: “We’re not oracles,” he said. “But I can tell you what I’ve seen, what I’ve touched and felt and smelled. That’s what I hope to share—not predictions, but facts on the ground.”

The personal rapport was part of the format, not a substitute for the subject matter. Tur described candid conversation among friends as a way into a discussion: “The best conversations are the ones you have with your closest friends,” she said.
Why did the in-person format matter to them?
Tur said being together in a room could offer an experience that watching through a screen could not. “I think people want a connection,” Tur said. “We spend so much of our life on screens. They want to feel a human connection. Being in the room gives you a different perspective, a different vantage point.”

The profile presented face-to-face connection as part of MSNBC’s audience-engagement effort and as something the journalists valued. That was the network’s stated rationale, not evidence of a measured business outcome.
