Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson and other Dawson’s Creek cast members reunited in New York on September 22, 2025, for a live reading of the show’s 1998 pilot episode. The fundraiser supported F Cancer and James Van Der Beek, who was ill and joined the event by video. He was alive at the time; he died on February 11, 2026.
What happened at the Dawson’s Creek reunion?
The event, billed as the Dawson’s Creek Class Reunion, took place at Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City. Cast members read the pilot episode of the drama, which first aired in 1998. The gathering was both a reunion and a fundraiser for F Cancer and Van Der Beek.
Michelle Williams, who helped organize the event, described the cast’s connection in a statement reported by Variety: “We grew up in Capeside and that’s a bond that will last a lifetime.” Creator Kevin Williamson also said, “Dawson’s Creek changed my life.”
Who took part in the live reading?
Holmes, Jackson and Williams were among the returning cast members. The participants also included Mary Beth Peil, John Wesley Shipp, Mary-Margaret Humes, Nina Repeta, Kerr Smith, Meredith Monroe and Busy Philipps. Lin-Manuel Miranda joined them to read the role of Dawson Leery.

Why wasn’t James Van Der Beek there in person?
Van Der Beek withdrew because he was ill. He did not stand onstage with his former castmates, but appeared in video messages, including one introducing Miranda as Dawson. In a video message reported by The Associated Press, Van Der Beek said: “I can’t believe I don’t get to hug my cast mates,” and added, “I wanted to stand on that stage and thank every single person in this theater for being here tonight.”
Van Der Beek’s family announced his death on February 11, 2026, at age 48. The Associated Press reported that he had been treated for colorectal cancer. His illness and death give the reunion added poignancy, but the September 2025 gathering was held while he was alive and was not a posthumous memorial.

The September 2025 gathering was a full-cast fundraiser centered on Dawson’s Creek and Van Der Beek. A separate report from ABC News described Holmes and Jackson attending a New York film screening together on April 14, 2026. That appearance was not a cast reunion. ABC News also reported that Holmes shared a handwritten tribute after Van Der Beek’s death; that tribute was separate from the 2025 fundraiser.
