In a Scroll interview published August 16, 2018, Kajol described Eela, her character in Helicopter Eela, as a recognisable Indian mother whose intense devotion to her son also shapes her own story. The film was then being presented as Kajol’s next movie, ahead of its planned September 7, 2018 release; “latest movie” refers to that 2018 moment, not to her latest release today.
What did Kajol mean by “every Indian mother”?
Kajol called Eela “every Indian mother you have met or heard of,” then immediately added that she is “also a little more than that.” The qualification matters: Eela is familiar in her protective, all-consuming care for her son, but the character is not defined only by a stock image of a mother.
As Kajol put it, “whatever Eela does, whether it is OTT or OCD, is because she has unconditional, blinkered love for her son.” In context, those words explain the impulse behind Eela’s sometimes excessive behaviour. Kajol said the bond drives “the comedy, who she is and what she wants to be.”
The interview presents Eela’s affection as both the source of the film’s humour and the starting point for her personal arc—not simply a joke about an overinvolved parent.

What is Helicopter Eela about?
Kajol plays Eela, a single mother to teenage Vivan, played by Riddhi Sen. When Eela enrolls in his college, Vivan resists her presence and possessiveness. The conflict prompts Eela to turn toward self-discovery and try to revive the singing career she had left behind.
That premise gives the mother-son relationship two sides: Eela’s devotion shapes her daily choices, while her attempt to rediscover a life beyond motherhood becomes part of the story. Kajol stressed the film’s focus on Eela when she said, “There is a father in the movie, but this is Eela’s story.”

Why did Kajol like the script?
Kajol said the script appealed to her because it centred on a woman and combined humour with understanding. She described its message as being delivered gently: “What I liked about the script was that it was about a woman, it had laughter and understanding, and a message that was said in such a nice way that you could not fight it.”
She also said she already had rapport with director Pradeep Sarkar, which made the production comfortable for her. The interview does not present her comments as an official statement on behalf of the film; they are her explanation of what attracted her to the role and script.

How was the film adapted?
The Scroll interview says Helicopter Eela was based on Anand Gandhi’s Gujarati play Beta Kaagdo, with Gandhi and Mitesh Shah as co-writers and Pradeep Sarkar directing. Kajol said she had not seen the play, so the interview does not support a detailed comparison of the play’s plot with the film’s.

In the same interview, Kajol joked, “I have had 27 comebacks – every time I do a film, it’s my comeback, but where did I ever go?” The number is part of her quip about how a return is routinely framed whenever she makes a film; it should not be read as a verified tally.
