Katie Holmes shared a handwritten tribute to her former Dawson’s Creek co-star James Van Der Beek after he died on February 11, 2026, at age 48. She remembered their friendship with grief and gratitude, and offered support to his wife, Kimberly, and their children.
What Katie Holmes said about James Van Der Beek
In her handwritten Instagram note, Holmes wrote that the news was a lot to process and that she was grateful to have shared part of Van Der Beek’s journey. She recalled laughter, conversations about life, James Taylor songs and what she called the “adventures of a unique youth.”
Holmes described the loss this way: “I mourn this loss with a heart holding the reality of his absence and deep gratitude for his imprint on it.” She also wrote, “To share space with your imagination is sacred.”
She distilled the qualities she admired in him into four words: “Bravery. Compassion. Selflessness. Strength.” Holmes closed by offering to be there for his wife, Kimberly, and their children. CBS News and Vanity Fair reported excerpts from the letter.
