News agencies withdrew Kensington Palace’s 2024 Mother’s Day photograph of Catherine, Princess of Wales, after reviews raised concerns that it had been digitally altered. Catherine apologized for the confusion the next day and said she sometimes experiments with photo editing. The agencies’ decisions reflected their image standards; they did not establish that the photograph was wholly fake.
What happened to the photograph?
On March 10, 2024, UK Mother’s Day, Kensington Palace published a photograph of Catherine with her children, George, Charlotte and Louis. The image was credited to Prince William and described as having been taken earlier that week in Windsor. The Associated Press called it Catherine’s first official photograph since her abdominal surgery. The Associated Press reported the release and subsequent withdrawal.
After reviewing the image, the Associated Press (AP), Reuters, Getty Images and Agence France-Presse (AFP) withdrew it or issued notices advising against its use. Their actions came after the photograph had already circulated publicly. AP reported that the picture had almost 50 million views on X by the end of March 10, 2024; that is a historical figure reported at the time, not a current view count. AP’s report gives that figure.
Why did agencies withdraw it?
The agencies did not all give the same explanation. AP said the image appeared manipulated and did not meet its photo standards. It pointed to an apparent inconsistency where Princess Charlotte’s left hand met the sleeve of her sweater. AFP described the image as altered, while Reuters said it deleted the photograph after a post-publication review, according to Al Jazeera’s account of the agencies’ responses.
#1 Best Overall
AP called its action a “photo kill”: a retraction that tells clients to remove an image from their systems. Its notice, reproduced in AP’s March 11 report, said, “At closer inspection it appears that the source has manipulated the image,” and, “No replacement photo will be sent.”
AP’s standards distinguish between limited adjustments that help reproduce a photograph clearly and changes that compromise its authentic nature. Cropping, toning and color adjustments may be acceptable when they preserve accuracy; substantive changes to density, contrast, color or saturation are not. A withdrawal under those standards means the agency judged the image unsuitable for its distribution. AP explicitly said there was no suggestion the image was fake. The “photo kill” alone does not prove that the scene was fabricated.

What did Catherine say about editing?
On March 11, Catherine apologized for the confusion. In a statement reported by BBC News, she wrote: “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing.” BBC News reported her apology.
That statement acknowledged editing but did not give a complete list of changes or describe the editing process. The available reporting also does not provide the original, unedited file for comparison, so the precise edits cannot be established from these accounts.

What the withdrawal does—and does not—show
The verified sequence is straightforward: Kensington Palace released the photograph; agencies reviewed and withdrew it or warned against its use; and Catherine apologized, acknowledging that she sometimes edits photographs. The agency decisions concern whether the image met their standards for publication and distribution. They are not, by themselves, proof that the entire image was invented.
Contemporary coverage described speculation about Catherine’s absence and health arising around the image’s release. The photograph and the agencies’ decisions do not establish her health status, and they are not evidence for health theories. BBC’s report on the apology addresses her statement about editing; it does not establish a health explanation.
