On April 30, 2025, she told supporters, “Please know I am OK,” and described the internet as “a dumping ground for unhinged and unhealed.” The phrase “horribly unfair” appeared in a Futurism headline, not in the message attributed to Perry.
What did Katy Perry say about the backlash?
The Guardian reported that Perry posted her message beneath a fan group’s Instagram post celebrating the opening week of her Lifetimes tour. She acknowledged the criticism without calling it “horribly unfair”:
“Please know I am OK, I have done a lot [of] work around knowing who I am, what is real and what is important to me.”
“When the ‘online’ world tries to make me a human piñata, I take it with grace and send them love, cause I know so many people are hurting in so many ways and the internet is very much so a dumping ground for unhinged and unhealed.”

Futurism used “horribly unfair” in its headline about the controversy, but the wording is the publication’s framing—not a verified quotation from Perry.
Why was Perry criticized?
Coverage described criticism of more than one thing: her participation in the spaceflight, as well as her recent music and Lifetimes tour. The Guardian cited public reactions from Joe Rogan, Emily Ratajkowski and Olivia Munn. It also reported that Lily Allen later apologized for bringing Perry’s name into her criticism while maintaining that she disagreed with the flight.

In remarks after landing, she described the flight as being about collective energy, making space for future women, belonging and appreciating Earth. She also spoke about daisies as symbols of resilience and the planet’s beauty.

The controversy is easiest to understand by separating three things: Perry’s actual words, the headline’s interpretation and the different subjects of criticism. Her message said she was OK and characterized online attacks as a form of mockery directed at her; “horribly unfair” was not part of the quoted message. Reporting connected the criticism both to the flight and to her music and tour, while offering no representative survey or numerical comparison of the reactions.
