What did the Palace say about Catherine’s recovery?
Kensington Palace said Catherine was admitted to The London Clinic on Jan. 16, 2024, for planned abdominal surgery. The Palace described the surgery as successful and said it expected her to remain in hospital for 10 to 14 days before continuing her recovery at home. The 10-to-14-day period was the Palace’s estimate at the time, not a confirmed length of stay. Kensington Palace announced on Jan. 29 that Catherine had returned home to Windsor and was making good progress. On Feb. 29, a Palace spokesperson told ABC News that she continued to be doing well and that the Palace’s earlier guidance stood: it would provide significant updates. What surgery did she have?
The Palace identified the operation only as planned abdominal surgery. It did not publicly disclose the specific procedure or detailed medical information. No more specific description can be established from the Palace statements cited in the reports, so claims about the operation’s type would be speculation.

What was revealed after the January update?
On March 22, 2024, Catherine said in a video message that tests after her January operation had found cancer. Her statement made clear that the original understanding had been that her condition was non-cancerous; the “doing well” report in January was made before this later disclosure.
“In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.”

ABC News’s timeline reports that Catherine announced she had completed chemotherapy in September 2024. On Jan. 14, 2025, she said, “It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focused on recovery.” These are later dated updates; the 2025 announcement does not establish her health today. How should the recovery updates be understood?
The January and February 2024 Palace updates described recovery from surgery as it was publicly understood at the time. They should not be read as advance disclosure of the cancer later found in postoperative tests.
