The Little Princess Trust confirmed that Catherine, Princess of Wales—then the Duchess of Cambridge—donated hair anonymously. The often-repeated seven-inch length comes from contemporaneous media reporting, not from the charity’s account. The Trust announced the donation in 2018, years before Catherine’s later cancer diagnosis.
What is confirmed about the donation?
In an account published on 12 June 2018, the Little Princess Trust said it had received a telephone call on Friday 26 January informing it that the Duchess of Cambridge was its latest donor. The charity said the hair had been donated anonymously and was processed through its usual process. Read the Trust’s 2018 announcement.
The Trust confirmed the donation again in a retrospective published on 29 October 2019, describing the Duchess as having joined its donors nearly two years earlier. Read the 2019 retrospective.
Was it exactly seven inches?
Seven inches is the length reported by contemporaneous media coverage, which attributed the detail to a royal source. The Little Princess Trust’s announcement confirms the donation but does not state a measurement, so the length should be treated as reported rather than charity-confirmed. Allure’s January 2018 report described the haircut as having taken place in 2017.

How did the charity use donated hair?
The Trust said specialist wig manufacturers blend multiple individual hair donations to make a wig. In its 2018 announcement, it estimated that one wig can require 8–10 donations. That figure describes the charity’s stated production process; it does not mean Catherine’s hair alone made a wig.
Monica Glass, the Trust’s charity manager, said: “Receiving a free, real hair wig has a very positive impact on a child or young adult at such a difficult time.”

Who does the Little Princess Trust support?
The Trust’s 2019 account said it provided real-hair wigs to children and young people up to age 24 who had lost their hair because of cancer or other conditions. It also described funding research into kinder, less toxic treatments for childhood cancers. These are descriptions in the charity’s 2019 retrospective, not a confirmation of current eligibility; anyone considering donating or seeking support should check the Trust’s current guidance.
