In October 2024, before Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 reached theaters, Josh Hutcherson previewed a sequel with a wider world, higher stakes and more—and different—animatronics. He also said the filmmakers wanted to keep the characters emotionally grounded as the story expanded. Those were statements about the film’s aims, not a review of the finished movie.
What Josh Hutcherson said about the sequel
Hutcherson discussed the film in an interview with Esquire, reported by Dark Horizons on October 5, 2024. He described the sequel as “much bigger” with higher stakes, saying that “more animatronics” and “different animatronics” would be introduced as “the world just opens up in a big way.”
He also emphasized the challenge of expanding the setting without losing the emotional center: “We’re finding the balance right now of building this world and expanding it in a really cool way but also making sure the characters stay really grounded.” Hutcherson said the first film had relied on finding “the emotional truth of the characters” in a world he characterized as over-the-top and wacky.
His prediction for the sequel was that fans would enjoy its connection to the source material—and that it would be scarier. That is Hutcherson’s October 2024 preview, not confirmation that every intended element appeared in the final film.

What the preview suggested would change
| Element | Hutcherson’s preview | What it does—and does not—establish |
|---|---|---|
| Scale | The world opens up and the stakes rise. | A stated creative direction, not a detailed account of the finished plot. |
| Animatronics | More animatronics, including different ones. | He did not identify which additional characters would appear; Gizmodo’s October 6, 2024 report likewise noted that he did not disclose them. |
| Horror | “It’s gonna be scarier, too, actually.” | An expectation expressed before release, rather than an independent assessment of the movie’s scares. |
| Character focus | The filmmakers were trying to keep the characters grounded as the world expanded. | A stated storytelling priority, not a guarantee about how audiences would respond. |
How director Emma Tammi later described the direction
In an interview published November 21, 2025, director Emma Tammi also described a larger, darker sequel. She said horror fans wanted it to be scarier and linked that goal to more animatronics and a tonally darker story. At the same time, she said the filmmakers wanted to widen the scope while retaining familiar people and spaces from the first film. Tammi called the sequel “bigger,” “scarier,” and “action packed,” and, in response to a question about delivering a scarier film, said, “I think we really delivered on that.” Those are Tammi’s remarks, separate from Hutcherson’s earlier comments.
The AU Review’s interview page gives a premise in which Mike and police officer Vanessa have kept the truth about Abby’s animatronic friends from her. Abby sneaks out to reconnect with Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy, setting further events in motion and uncovering secrets about Freddy’s origin. This is a synopsis-level description, not a basis for adding further plot details.

How the sequel’s stated aims compare with the first film
The interviews point to three intended contrasts or continuities with the first movie:
- World and scale: Hutcherson described a broader setting and higher stakes, with a larger and more varied animatronic lineup.
- Horror tone: Both Hutcherson and Tammi spoke of making the sequel scarier; Tammi additionally described a darker tone.
- Emotional continuity: Hutcherson stressed grounded characters, while Tammi said the expansion should retain familiar people and places.
These are reported creative intentions, not a critical comparison of the completed films. The movie is based on Scott Cawthon’s Five Nights at Freddy’s video game series; Hutcherson’s reference to having “a lot of fun with the source” is consistent with that adaptation context.
