Die Hard is officially classified as an action/adventure film, but whether it also counts as a Christmas movie depends on what you mean by the label. Christmas shapes the story’s setup, family stakes and imagery; skeptics counter that the holiday is the setting for an action thriller, not its central subject. Both readings have a case.
What kind of film is Die Hard officially?
20th Century Studios lists Die Hard as an R-rated action/adventure film. It was released on July 15, 1988, runs 2 hours 12 minutes, and was directed by John McTiernan from a screenplay by Jeb Stuart and Steven E. de Souza. The studio synopsis describes New York cop John McClane arriving in California for a Christmas visit, only for terrorists to take over the office building where his estranged wife is attending a holiday party. Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman star. 20th Century Studios
That official genre label and the seasonal label answer different questions. “Action/adventure” describes the film’s category; “Christmas movie” can mean either a story in which Christmas is essential or simply a film people choose to watch during the holidays.
Why many viewers say it is a Christmas movie
Christmas sets the plot in motion
McClane travels to Los Angeles to see his children and estranged wife over Christmas. The office Christmas party gathers the people who become hostages, while the holiday helps explain why the building is lightly occupied. Screenwriter Steven E. de Souza has argued that Christmas is woven into the premise, rather than added as a decorative backdrop. The Washington Post reported his reasoning and noted that the source story also takes place on Christmas Eve. The Washington Post

The holiday is part of the emotional story and visual language
McClane’s visit is bound up with the strain in his marriage and his hope of reconnecting with his family. Holiday imagery appears throughout the film, including the memorable sight of a dead captor wearing a Santa hat beside the message, “Now I have a machine gun. Ho-Ho-Ho.” For de Souza, the combination of the family visit, party and recurring Christmas references makes the holiday integral to the film’s identity. He put his view this way: “If ‘Die Hard’ is not a Christmas movie, then ‘White Christmas’ is not a Christmas movie,” as quoted by the Washington Post.
For some people, the viewing tradition is enough
Not every use of “Christmas movie” is a genre claim. Some viewers mean a film they return to during the season. The Washington Post described fans watching Die Hard at home and attending December screenings; in 2020, the American Film Institute’s Movie Club called it a Christmas classic and invited viewers to discuss why it continues to resonate. That supports calling it a holiday favorite for many, not claiming that every viewer sees it the same way. American Film Institute

Why others say it is not
The holiday may be setting, not subject
A stricter test asks whether Christmas is central to the film’s subject, rather than simply the occasion for its action. A Rotten Tomatoes staff contributor argues that the story could retain its core action if the holiday party and family visit were replaced with other occasions. On this reading, Die Hard is an action thriller set at Christmas, not a Christmas story in the same sense as a film focused on the holiday itself. This is an editorial criterion, not an official ruling. Rotten Tomatoes
Its release and its star do not settle the question
The film opened in July, not as a Christmas-season release. That date is a useful reminder that its holiday reputation grew apart from its original release timing, but it cannot determine how audiences later classify or watch it. Bruce Willis also said, “ ‘Die Hard’ is not a Christmas movie,” at his Comedy Central roast, according to the Washington Post. De Souza suggested Willis may have been joking in that setting; the report does not establish his intent, and the remark is not a binding definition.

A practical way to decide
The disagreement usually comes down to which meaning of “Christmas movie” you are using. Ask:
- Plot: Is Christmas necessary to the events, or could another gathering and visit serve the same function?
- Emotional center: Does the family-reconciliation thread make the holiday’s meaning central to the story?
- Atmosphere: How much do Christmas imagery and seasonal details shape the experience?
- Viewing habit: Are you describing the film’s genre, or saying it is one you like to watch in December?
The first question favors the skeptical view; the family story, imagery and seasonal viewing tradition strengthen the case for “yes.” No single answer follows unless you first choose a definition.

Why the argument comes back every December
The debate has become part of the film’s seasonal life. The Atlantic traced the recurring online argument to posts in Slate and The Guardian in 2007, followed by list-making, rebuttals, social posts and merchandise. It also described Google Trends searches for the question rising each November and December. That account describes a recurring pattern, not a current search-volume measurement or proof of why any particular viewer enjoys the film. The Atlantic
The disagreement itself makes sense: the film combines recognizable Christmas symbols and a family visit with the pace and tone of an action thriller. That mix lets it work as a holiday-season watch for fans while leaving its genre label open to argument. For context, Die Hard is based on Roderick Thorp’s 1979 novel Nothing Lasts Forever, which the AFI notes was a sequel to his 1966 novel The Detective. The AFI also reports that the film received four Academy Award nominations: Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Effects Editing and Best Visual Effects. AFI Movie Club
