Jelly Roll says his old criminal mindset did not disappear as soon as his offending ended. In a 2024 interview, the singer recalled that he still had criminal thoughts at times about a decade earlier and remained uneasy when police were behind him. He described that change as gradual and personal—not as a universal account of rehabilitation.
What Jelly Roll said about leaving his criminal mindset behind
In Joseph Hudak’s Rolling Stone interview, published October 1, 2024, Jelly Roll (Jason DeFord) said, “I’m 15 to 20 years removed from being a real criminal, and I don’t think like a criminal at all.” He immediately qualified the distance between his earlier life and his present outlook: “It took a long time to quit thinking that way.” The interview appears in the October 2024 issue scan; AllSides’ listing identifies the story’s date and Rolling Stone attribution.
Asked whether he was thinking like a criminal about ten years earlier, he said he still had criminal thoughts at times. His account emphasizes a gradual shift in how he thought and reacted, rather than a single turning point.
How his reaction to police changed
Jelly Roll recalled that even when sober, seeing police behind him once prompted anxiety. “I could be sober as a judge and straight as a harpoon, but I would still be like, ‘Uh-oh, a cop,’” he said of his past response. He contrasted that with his present inclination: “Now, when the cops are behind me, I almost want to wave at them and say hi.”

That contrast is his own description of how he feels now versus how he felt before; it is not an independently assessed measure of his conduct or mindset.
His changing view of jail and punishment
He also described a shift in his judgment about people who receive jail sentences. He said he once would not wish jail on his worst enemy, but now thinks someone who committed an offense and received time may have deserved it. The remark reflects his personal change in outlook, not a general argument about justice, sentencing, or rehabilitation.

How the reflection connects to Beautifully Broken
The interview placed Jelly Roll’s comments alongside his then-new album, Beautifully Broken. He described the project as an exploration of mental health, addiction, and detox, saying, “I knew early in this project that this was my exploration of mental health, this was my exploration of addiction, and this was my exploration of detox.” He said the album took him 18 months to write.
“Winning Streak” and recovery
Jelly Roll discussed “Winning Streak” as a song about an alcoholic receiving a reminder at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. He said its message was: “There’s a lot of people that need to hear that in life. Everybody is coming off a loss, baby.”
