Mahito’s abilities center on Idle Transfiguration, a cursed technique that alters souls and, in turn, reshapes bodies. His Domain Expansion, Self-Embodiment of Perfection, extends that technique to people inside the domain without the ordinary need for physical contact. Later, Mahito learns to activate the domain for just 0.2 seconds—a brief, tactical use that does not make his power unlimited or impossible to counter.
Spoiler note: This explainer discusses Mahito’s Domain Expansion and the 0.2-second activation, which appear later than his first use of Idle Transfiguration. The manga first shows the technique in chapter 18 and the domain in chapter 29; the anime first shows them in episodes 8 and 13, respectively.

What is Mahito’s Idle Transfiguration?
Idle Transfiguration is Mahito’s innate cursed technique. Rather than simply inflicting ordinary physical damage, it lets him alter a person’s soul; the body changes to match that altered soul. That is why the technique can produce transformations far more drastic than a conventional strike.
Mahito can also use the technique on himself, changing his own shape. In its ordinary use, the ability is associated with physical contact: Mahito needs to touch a target to affect them. The exact outcome is not best described as automatic instant death on every touch. The story presents the technique in specific encounters, where circumstances and an opponent’s ability to resist or counter matter.

How does Self-Embodiment of Perfection work?
Self-Embodiment of Perfection is Mahito’s Domain Expansion, an application of Idle Transfiguration. Its decisive advantage is reach: inside the domain, the technique can affect targets without Mahito having to make the ordinary physical contact himself. This is the domain’s sure-hit effect as described in the cited ability reference.
The domain is therefore much more dangerous than a simple extension of Mahito’s touch. But its risk is also shown in a particular story circumstance: when Yuji enters the domain, Sukuna is exposed to the danger of Mahito affecting souls there. Mahito’s concern about that risk helps explain why the domain is not a consequence-free way to attack anyone nearby.

What is Mahito’s 0.2-second domain?
In episode 45, Mahito manifests Self-Embodiment of Perfection for 0.2 seconds. The narration explains that he has learned to combine manifestation of his innate domain and activation of his technique—steps that are usually separate—into one. The unusually brief activation is a tactical adaptation under pressure, allowing him to use the domain’s effect while limiting the exposure he anticipates from Sukuna.
The sequence also shows counterplay rather than a guaranteed victory: Todo activates Simple Domain to protect himself, while Yuji rushes Mahito during the brief domain sequence. The episode establishes this as Mahito’s specific maneuver; it does not establish a general duration rule for other domains.

Can Mahito’s technique be countered?
Mahito’s abilities are formidable, but the story gives important context for how they operate:
- Outside the domain: Idle Transfiguration is ordinarily tied to physical contact, so it is not simply a remote attack that automatically reaches every opponent.
- Inside the domain: the sure-hit effect removes that ordinary contact requirement for targets within it, making the domain a major escalation.
- Defensive techniques matter: episode 45 depicts Todo using Simple Domain as protection during Mahito’s brief activation.
- Scene-specific risks constrain Mahito: the danger involving Sukuna when Yuji enters the domain is relevant to Mahito’s choices in that scene, not a universal rule that should be detached from its context.
These examples clarify the difference between a dangerous technique and an all-purpose answer. The cited descriptions establish the ordinary contact condition, the domain’s expanded reach, and particular countermeasures, but do not specify every rule for every opponent or encounter.
