Jumbo Cactuar is an official Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY creature, and its joke lands because the card turns a signature Final Fantasy attack into an absurdly oversized combat bonus. The humor is rooted in the source game, but it also plays against Magic’s familiar creature stats: a 1/7 Plant can suddenly hit with a power of 10,000.
What is the Jumbo Cactuar card?
Jumbo Cactuar is card 191 in the Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY main set. Its borderless woodblock version is card 343 on the official card list. This is a real crossover card, not a fan-made joke.
The tabletop set released on June 13, 2025. Wizards describes the collaboration as drawing on the sixteen core FINAL FANTASY games; its official product page lists Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Commander decks, and a Starter Kit. The collection guide classified the main set as Standard legal at release. That is release-era information, not a claim about current legality.
Why does Jumbo Cactuar get 10,000 power?
The card’s effect
Jumbo Cactuar is a seven-mana 1/7 Plant creature. Its ability, “10,000 Needles,” says: “Whenever this creature attacks, it gets +9999/+0 until end of turn.” In other words, when it attacks, its power becomes 10,000 for that turn while its toughness remains 7. The ability grants power; it does not make the creature permanently 10,000 power.

The Final Fantasy reference
In Final Fantasy, Cactuars are associated with the “1000 Needles” attack, while Jumbo Cactuar takes the gag to a grander scale. Square Enix’s official card showcase says the card shows Jumbo Cactuar using its famous “10,000 Needles” attack against Irving. The number is therefore a recognizable franchise reference, not a published statistic about the card’s popularity or performance.
Why the joke works in Magic
Magic creatures are normally judged by their power and toughness, so a card that begins as a 1/7 and leaps to 10,000 power when it attacks creates an immediate visual punchline. The effect is also unusually direct: the card does not merely allude to a huge attack in its name or art; its rules text makes the number part of the game action.

That contrast suits the set’s creative approach. Wizards describes “Cute and Whimsical” as one of the set’s creative pillars and discusses making cards recognizable to franchise fans while still legible to players who may not know every game-specific reference in its creative overview. Square Enix’s commentary calls Jumbo Cactuar “such a funny character” and says whimsical designs like it excite the team. “One of MTG’s best monsters” is a matter of taste, not a ranking established by tournament results or a popularity poll; the card earns the praise as a compact, readable joke that works both as a Final Fantasy nod and as Magic rules text.
Who is Irving, and what does the art reference?
The official showcase identifies Irving as Jumbo Cactuar’s target in the depiction of the 10,000 Needles attack. The card’s art and ability thus connect the monster’s exaggerated damage to a specific Final Fantasy character rather than leaving the number as an unexplained flourish.

Wizards corrected the borderless card’s artist attribution in a June 9, 2025 statement, naming Hisashi Momose. The correction addressed an earlier incorrect credit across languages.

If you want this exact joke for a collection or deck, look for the single card rather than relying on a randomized booster: opening a booster does not guarantee Jumbo Cactuar. The standard and borderless woodblock versions are distinct treatments, so check which one a listing actually shows before buying. Wizards lists Amazon as a product destination, but availability of a specific single-card listing can change.
