Joni Mitchell made her first performance at the Grammy Awards on February 4, 2024, singing “Both Sides Now” at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards. Brandi Carlile introduced her, and the performance brought Mitchell to the Grammy stage as a musical performer for the first time—not as a first-time Grammy winner or nominee.

What did she perform, and who joined her?
Mitchell sang “Both Sides Now.” Brandi Carlile introduced her, and the Recording Academy’s post-show retrospective names Carlile, Allison Russell, Sistastrings, Lucius, Jacob Collier, and Blake Mills among the accompanying musicians.
The song has a history spanning decades. Mitchell first released “Both Sides Now” on her 1969 album Clouds. A live version is also part of Joni Mitchell at Newport, the 2023 album documenting her performance at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival. Reflecting on that record during her Grammy acceptance speech, Mitchell said, “We had so much fun at that concert and I think you can feel that on the record.”

Why was the appearance significant?
The Grammy performance came after Mitchell had returned to performing at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival. The Recording Academy described that Newport set as her first performance in 20 years. CBS reported that it was her first public performance after the brain aneurysm she suffered in 2015, and covered her account of relearning guitar after the aneurysm. CBS’s contemporaneous report provides that health context.
The distinction matters: the Grammy appearance was her first performance at the Grammy Awards, not her first performance anywhere after 2015 or her first Grammy appearance of any kind.
Rank #2
How did the performance relate to her Grammy history?
Mitchell was already a major Grammy honoree. Before the 2024 ceremony, the Recording Academy counted nine wins and 18 nominations; it had given her its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002. Her 2024 nomination was for Best Folk Album for Joni Mitchell at Newport (Live), and she won the category at the ceremony. The Academy’s retrospective confirms the performance and award result.
