Josh Carter’s commitment to caregiver advocacy grew out of caring for family: first his maternal grandmother, Dorothy Davis, after a stroke, and later his infant son, Jonathan, who was diagnosed with a rare intestinal disorder. The grandson of Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter says those experiences helped him understand his late grandmother’s work in a more personal way.
Who is Josh Carter?
Josh Carter is a grandson of former President Jimmy Carter and former first lady Rosalynn Carter. In a 2024 PEOPLE profile syndicated by AOL, he described himself as part of the “sandwich generation”—people who may be caring for children and older relatives at the same time. Public-media coverage also identified him as a spokesman for the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers at the time it was published.
In the Carter family, Rosalynn was known as “Mom.” Josh’s story connects her public advocacy to the day-to-day demands of caregiving inside his own family.
How caregiving shaped Josh Carter’s perspective
Caring for his grandmother, Dorothy Davis
Josh helped care for his maternal grandmother, Dorothy Davis, after she suffered a stroke and experienced severe memory loss. He later described the effect on the family as substantial: “Caregiving became a full-time responsibility for the whole family. The toll it took on us was real,” he told Well Beings.

Supporting his son, Jonathan
Josh and his wife, Sarah, faced another demanding caregiving period when their youngest son, Jonathan, was diagnosed with a rare intestinal disorder as an infant. The family founded the VEO-IBD Foundation to support parents and caregivers of children with the disease. The available reporting identifies the disorder in those terms; it does not provide a basis for adding a more specific diagnosis or clinical account.
Georgia Public Broadcasting later reported details Josh shared about Jonathan’s care. Jonathan was hospitalized for 40 days in 2020. Josh said his family tried about 15 medications over two and a half years before finding a treatment that worked. He also described one treatment’s cost without insurance coverage as $24,241.98 per month. That figure is Josh’s account of his son’s case, not a general or current medication price.

Rosalynn’s role in Jonathan’s care
Josh said Rosalynn was closely involved in Jonathan’s care and kept informed about his condition. Living through these family crises gave him a deeper appreciation for her advocacy on behalf of caregivers.
How Rosalynn Carter’s caregiver advocacy continues
Rosalynn Carter founded the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers in 1987. Her work helped bring caregivers into public discussion, including the idea that caregiving touches nearly everyone. Well Beings quoted her saying: “There are only four kinds of people in the world. Those who have been caregivers, those who currently are caregivers, those who will be caregivers and those who will need caregiving. That’s all of us.”

In February 2025, the Carter Center announced that the institute would merge with its Mental Health Program, with completion planned by June 2025. The Center described the change as bringing caregiver support together with mental-health policy and services. Josh welcomed the merger, saying: “My grandmother spent her life championing those who help others. Through her work at the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers, my grandmother elevated caregivers onto the national stage.”
By May 2025, Georgia Public Broadcasting reported that the institute was partnering with the Carter Center’s mental-health program and that Josh spoke at the Center’s annual Mental Health Forum. The institutional name and program structure may evolve; the Carter Center is the source for current organizational details.
