Joondalup Festival’s standout 2024 attraction was Electric Kingdom, a free public installation of illuminated animals at Hillarys Boat Harbour. The festival ran from March 2 to 22, 2024, so the event and its program are now over. The line-up announcement was reported on January 20, 2024.
What was Electric Kingdom?
Electric Kingdom brought glowing animal figures to Hillarys Boat Harbour during the festival. The announcement named a tiger, a falcon, pandas, giraffes and Tarutharu, identified as the Kaurna skink. It also introduced a new snake-necked turtle called Yaakan.
The turtle was created in collaboration with Nimunburr Yawuru Ballardong Noongar artist Kambarni. The announcement gave its Noongar names as yaakan, booyi or choonya.
Yaakan’s design and construction
Electric Kingdom’s operator says the Hillarys presentation included eight installations and roaming puppets. Its retrospective describes Yaakan as six metres tall, with a retractable head, patterned EPE foam construction and thousands of embedded LEDs. The operator credits Indigenous artists Kambarni and Boox Kid in connection with the turtle’s creation.

MARCHWAY Lightweight Folding Camping Chair, Compact Stable, Holds 330 lbs
- Superior Stability & Strength: The triangular frame minimizes front-to-back and side-to-side wobble for a secure, steady seat. 15mm-thick aircraft-grade aluminum legs and reinforced plastic joints support up to 330 lbs on varied terrain.
- Lightweight & Compact: This ultralight aluminum camping chair weighs just 2.7 lbs including its carry bag. Carry it in one hand, or pack it down to strap onto or slide into a backpack. It delivers an outstanding strength-to-weight ratio and is ideal for campers, hikers, backpackers, hunters, bikers, and kayakers.
- Easy Setup & Fold Away: The shock-corded frame snaps into place. Pull the base handle outward to lock the frame, then slip the seat onto the four poles. You’re seated in under a minute. Two integrated Velcro straps secure the folded poles: wrap one strap around the folded poles on one side, then repeat on the other side. The seat fabric starts snug and breaks in for easier setup.
- Engineered for Enduring Comfort: The angled seat keeps you comfortably upright for conversation yet relaxed for lounging. Breathable ripstop polyester and a weight-distributing triangular base keep you cool and supported while you chat, read, or stargaze. Settle in and enjoy.
- Your Go-Anywhere Seat: From backpacking, fishing, and hunting trips to motorcycle tours, picnics, sporting events, and backyard BBQs, this heavy-duty portable chair delivers comfort anywhere. The go-to seat for adventurers who value stability, lightness, and ease.
The operator also reported that its separate Electric Kingdom Melbourne run drew “over 48,000 guests” in 2023. That figure refers to Melbourne, not Joondalup; no Joondalup 2024 attendance figure is established here.
