John Frusciante said he became “quite off balance mentally” during the last couple of years he toured with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Looking back on his 2009 departure, he described touring pressure and his own state of mind—not a single cause or a clinical diagnosis.
What Frusciante said about his state of mind
In an interview reported in 2022, Frusciante recalled: “I became quite off balance mentally those last couple of years we toured.” The remark refers to the final touring years before his second departure from the band, following the Stadium Arcadium era. The article’s phrase “dark place” is a paraphrase; his reported words were “off balance mentally” and “an imbalanced mess.” Louder’s account of the interview and a March 2022 NME report carry his comments.

How touring and the occult fit into his account
Frusciante described his interest in the occult as a way to get away from the mentality of touring: “As the tour went on, I got deep into the occult, which became a way of escaping the mindset of tour life.” He added, “The occult tends to magnify whatever you are, and I was an imbalanced mess.”
Those remarks describe how he understood the experience in retrospect. They do not establish that occult interests alone caused his departure. Frusciante also referred to pressure from people around him and pressure he put on himself; his account does not identify one sole reason for leaving.

How the band responded to his decision
Vocalist Anthony Kiedis recalled that Frusciante was firm about leaving: “John was very absolute about not wanting to do this anymore.” Kiedis said the band understood that Frusciante did not want to continue and did not try to talk him out of it. That is the band’s recollection of its response; Frusciante’s comments describe his own experience.

Frusciante’s second departure took place in 2009, after the touring period for Stadium Arcadium. He rejoined the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2019. This was distinct from his earlier departure in 1992. The 2022 interview coverage looks back on the later exit and reunion rather than offering a contemporaneous account of his decision.
