John Boyega said he had £45 in his bank account when J.J. Abrams asked him to come in about Star Wars. The widely repeated “about $60” is a rounded dollar rendering of that amount—not a report of Boyega’s net worth. He said the trip to meet Abrams cost £33.83.
What did John Boyega say he had when Abrams called?
Recalling the story at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, Boyega said: “At the time I had £45 in my account. It took £33 and 83p to get to J.J. Do the math.” Variety reported his account on April 15, 2025. The quoted figure is in pounds; “about $60” is the rounded conversion used in some headlines.
Subtracting the reported travel cost from the reported balance gives £11.17. That is only arithmetic from the two figures Boyega gave, not a separately verified account balance after the journey.
Was he really “worth” only $60?
The anecdote describes money in a bank account, not Boyega’s total wealth. Net worth would take account of assets and liabilities as well; the reports do not establish those, his salary for the film, or the terms of his contract. So the headline wording “worth only $60” is misleading if read as a net-worth estimate.

How did the meeting lead to Star Wars?
Boyega was being considered for Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The Guardian reported that he was offered the role in 2014 after a seven-month audition process. Variety says Boyega went to meet Abrams and offered to audition again. Abrams told him, “You’re [in ‘Star Wars’].”
Before that casting, Boyega had led the film Attack the Block, as the Guardian noted in its profile of the actor. The £45 anecdote captures the cost of making it to a pivotal meeting; it does not by itself describe the full audition process or the financial circumstances of his career.

Why do accounts of the trip differ?
A 2015 Guardian profile recounted an earlier version of the call and meeting and reported a £70 cab fare. That is a separate earlier account; it should not be combined with Boyega’s later, specific £33.83 travel figure. Variety’s 2025 report is the source for the £45 balance and £33.83 cost.
