The public dispute over John Amos’s care began with conflicting statements from his children in June 2023. Shannon Amos alleged elder abuse and financial exploitation; John publicly denied being abused or neglected. Later reports described law-enforcement investigations, with April 2024 coverage saying LAPD found no evidence of wrongdoing. Amos died on August 21, 2024, and his death was publicly announced on October 1. The reporting below distinguishes allegations, denials and reported investigation updates; it does not establish that abuse occurred.

Who was involved?

Shannon Amos and K.C. Amos are John Amos’s children with his first wife, Noel Mickelson, according to the Associated Press. The public dispute centered on competing claims about their father’s care and who should make decisions for him. The accounts reported at the time do not establish that either sibling committed wrongdoing.

June 8, 2023: Shannon alleges abuse; John denies it

The Los Angeles Times later reported that Shannon posted on Instagram alleging elder abuse and financial exploitation, and said her father’s life was “hanging by a thread.” John said he was not in intensive care, was not in danger and was not suffering abuse. His publicist said he had been hospitalized but was recovering after doctors drained fluid from his lower body.

Shannon told the Times, “My priority has always been the safety, stability, and well-being of my father.” These were competing public accounts, not a finding that abuse had occurred.

June 25, 2023: dispute over medical decision-making

Shannon said K.C. no longer had authority to make medical decisions for their father and said she had taken legal action. The Times reported that the Custer County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado was investigating allegations. John said he was okay and claimed Shannon had taken advantage of him. Those claims and denials were attributed to the people who made them; the report did not establish them as fact.

July 2023: K.C. arrested on suspicion

The Times’s March 2024 account said K.C. was arrested in New Jersey on suspicion of making terroristic threats against his sister. An arrest on suspicion is not a conviction. The reporting cited here does not document the case’s ultimate disposition.

February–March 2024: LAPD report and ongoing investigation

The Los Angeles Times reported that LAPD generated an elder-abuse report on February 8 and described its investigation as open and ongoing on March 4. John again rejected the neglect allegations, saying, “This story about neglect is false and unmerited.” He also defended K.C., saying, “I’m proud of him for who he is as a person: a caring, thoughtful human being who respects me and I him.” These statements reflect the positions reported at that time.

April 2024: TV Insider reports LAPD found no evidence of wrongdoing

TV Insider reported in April that LAPD had concluded its investigation with no evidence of wrongdoing. Shannon said she was dissatisfied and raised further concerns about access to her father and his care. Those concerns were her account, not a police finding. This update followed the March report that the investigation was ongoing; it does not establish that abuse occurred.

August 21, 2024: John Amos dies at 84

The Associated Press reported that Amos died in Los Angeles on August 21, 2024, at age 84.

October 1–2, 2024: death announced; Shannon responds

The Associated Press reported that Amos’s death was publicly confirmed on October 1. K.C. described his father’s death as due to natural causes and said, “Many fans consider him their TV father.”

In a statement reported by BET on October 2, Shannon said she learned of the death through media coverage. She described the interval as 45 days and said, “We are devastated and left with many questions about how this happened 45 days ago, learning about it through the media like so many of you.” The 45-day figure is Shannon’s description of when she learned of his death.

What the public record establishes—and what it does not

  • Shannon made allegations about abuse and financial exploitation; John publicly denied abuse and neglect.
  • Reports described a Colorado investigation in June 2023 and an LAPD investigation as ongoing in March 2024. April 2024 coverage said LAPD concluded its investigation with no evidence of wrongdoing.
  • The reporting cited here does not establish that abuse occurred, nor does it resolve every family concern about access or care.
  • The cited coverage says K.C. was arrested on suspicion in July 2023; it does not establish a conviction or the final disposition of that case.
