The Associated Press reported that he died of natural causes. He was widely associated with James Evans Sr., the father in CBS sitcom Good Times, but his performance as adult Kunta Kinte in the historical miniseries Roots was another defining role.
Why John Amos was called the dad from Good Times
Amos played James Evans Sr., the patriarch of the Evans family, on Good Times. The CBS sitcom ran from 1974 to 1979; Amos appeared during the first half of its run. His son, Kelly Christopher Amos, said in a statement reported by the Associated Press, “Many fans consider him their TV father.”

Amos and co-star Esther Rolle wanted the series to portray a positive image of a Black family, the AP reported. They grew frustrated as the show increasingly centered on J.J., played by Jimmie Walker. Amos later described the sitcom’s realism to Time in a 2021 interview: “That show was the closest depiction in reality to life as an African-American family living in those circumstances as it could be.”
His other landmark television role: Kunta Kinte in Roots
In the 1977 miniseries Roots, Amos played the adult Kunta Kinte. The AP reported that the series received 37 Emmy nominations, including one for Amos. Reflecting on the role in his 2021 Time interview, he said, “I knew that it was a life-changing role for me, as an actor and just from a humanistic standpoint.”

The two performances showed different dimensions of Amos’s work: James Evans Sr. was a recurring role in a family sitcom, while Kunta Kinte was a central dramatic role in a historical miniseries.
John Amos’s film and television career
Beyond Good Times and Roots, the AP obituary noted Amos’s appearances in films including Coming to America, Die Hard 2, Madea’s Witness Protection and Uncut Gems. The range of those credits made his career far broader than the single role suggested by the familiar “TV father” description.
