Actor John Amos, best known as James Evans Sr. on Good Times, died in Los Angeles on August 21, 2024, at age 84. His publicist confirmed the death; the Associated Press reported that he died of natural causes. The news was announced on October 1, more than a month later.

Why John Amos was widely recognized

Amos’s best-known roles spanned sitcom, historical drama and film comedy. As James Evans Sr. on CBS’s Good Times, he helped portray a Black two-parent family navigating life in Chicago. In the 1977 miniseries Roots, he played adult Kunta Kinte, earning an Emmy nomination. In the 1988 comedy Coming to America, he played Cleo McDowell, the owner of McDowell’s, a fast-food restaurant that humorously echoes McDonald’s. He returned as Cleo in the 2021 sequel.

James Evans Sr. and the debate over Good Times

Good Times aired from 1974 to 1979. Amos and co-star Esther Rolle wanted the Evans family to be represented positively, and Amos objected to what he regarded as inauthentic storylines and the show’s increasing emphasis on J.J. Evans’s comic antics. J.J., played by Jimmie Walker, became a central source of the sitcom’s humor.

Amos was fired after three seasons, and the series killed off James Evans Sr. in a car accident. In a 2021 interview with Time, Amos described the show as “the closest depiction in reality to life as an African American family living in those circumstances as it could be.” He also recalled challenging the writers over storylines, saying, “There were several examples where I said, ‘No, you don’t do these things. It’s anathema to Black society. I’ll be the expert on that, if you don’t mind.’”

From Newark to a five-decade screen career

Born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1939, Amos worked in social services and had a brief professional football career before moving into entertainment. His television work included playing Gordy Howard on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, before his defining role on Good Times. His career in entertainment spanned more than five decades.

His work in Roots brought historical drama to the center of his screen legacy, while the Coming to America films introduced him to audiences through broad comedy. Together with James Evans Sr., these roles made Amos recognizable across generations and genres.

How his family and viewers remembered him

After Amos’s death, his son Kelly Christopher Amos said, “Many fans consider him their TV father.” The phrase reflects the enduring familiarity of James Evans Sr., a character whose presence helped anchor Good Times even as Amos’s disagreements with the show’s direction led to his departure.
