Kimmel’s joke drew on Trump’s “Sleepy Joe” nickname for former President Joe Biden. The White House disputed the implication, saying Trump was listening attentively and running the meeting. The footage and the competing accounts establish an argument over how Trump appeared—not that he was asleep.
What happened at the December 2 Cabinet meeting?
The official presidential-document record places Trump’s remarks and an exchange with reporters at 11:49 a.m. on December 2, 2025, in the Cabinet Room at the White House. The transcript was released the following day, December 3. The Office of the Federal Register record confirms the event’s date and setting.
TV Insider reported that footage from the meeting showed Trump closing his eyes several times and appearing to drift off as officials spoke. Its account describes an appearance, not confirmation that he fell asleep. TV Insider’s December 3 report says Kimmel used clips from the meeting in his Tuesday monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
