Jimmy Carter’s legacy was remembered after his death through a national state funeral, tributes from U.S. and international leaders, and the continuing work of the Carter Center. The Center reported more than 23,000 condolence-book messages from people in 155 countries, provinces, and territories. The available record supports a broad account of political and public tributes, but not a reliably sourced list of celebrity statements.

Carter’s legacy spans his presidency and decades of work after leaving office. In 1982, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter founded The Carter Center with Emory University. They initially envisioned it as a place for conflict resolution; its work expanded to include democracy, human rights, access to information, health, neglected tropical diseases, mental health, and caregiving. The Center says its programs have worked in more than 90 countries. That figure describes the institution’s reported reach, not an independent assessment of its impact. The Carter Center’s account of its history and legacy also places peacebuilding and global health at the heart of the Carters’ work.
How Carter’s humanitarian work shaped his legacy
Health work with a measurable long-term result
One concrete example is the effort to eradicate Guinea worm disease. The Carter Center reported 15 cases worldwide in 2024, compared with 3.5 million in 1986, the year its work began. These are figures reported by the Center; they illustrate the scale of the change without, by themselves, establishing that any single organization caused it. The Carter Center’s report on Guinea worm cases gives the figures and dates.

A legacy beyond the presidency
At Carter’s January 9, 2025, funeral, his grandson Jason Carter described his political life as “not just ahead of its time” but “prophetic.” He pointed to Carter’s positions on racial discrimination, incarceration, land protection, energy conservation, and emissions. The comment reflected a family member’s interpretation of Carter’s record, rather than a neutral assessment of every part of it. The Associated Press reported Jason Carter’s remarks.
Which politicians and world leaders paid tribute?
Tributes came from leaders across administrations, parties, and countries. The National Archives announced that January 9, 2025, would be a National Day of Mourning. Archivist of the United States Colleen Shogan said Carter had spent his life bringing people together to solve global problems with peaceful solutions. President Joe Biden called him a man of “character, courage, and compassion” whose lifetime of service made him one of the country’s influential statesmen. These are commemorative statements, not comprehensive evaluations of Carter’s political record. The National Archives announcement includes both remarks.

International responses included statements from Chinese President Xi Jinping, King Charles III, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, among others. CBS News compiled reactions from those leaders and U.S. officials. Because that article is a secondary roundup, it is best used to establish the breadth of responses rather than as the sole basis for extended quotations. CBS News’ roundup of reactions provides examples.
What happened at Carter’s state funeral?
The state funeral was held at Washington National Cathedral on January 9, 2025, the designated National Day of Mourning. Five current and former U.S. presidents attended. The Associated Press reported that Barack Obama and Donald Trump shook hands and spoke before the service—a notable encounter at a rare gathering across political divides, but not evidence of political agreement. AP’s funeral coverage reported the attendance and interaction.

In his eulogy, Biden said, “Jimmy Carter’s friendship taught me—and, through his life, taught me that strength of character is more than title or the power we hold.” He connected Carter’s example to treating people with dignity and respect and resisting abuses of power. The American Presidency Project transcript of Biden’s eulogy records the remarks.
How did the public honor Carter?
The Carter Center reported that its official condolence book received more than 23,000 messages from people in 155 countries, provinces, and territories. The figure shows the geographic reach of the messages submitted to that book; it is not a poll of public opinion. The Center’s retrospective on the condolence book gives the total.
Paige Alexander, the Center’s chief executive officer, wrote in a January 5, 2025, reflection that Carter’s legacy was too large for one person to carry alone. She recalled his many roles, including president, Carter Center co-founder, Nobel laureate, writer, and artist, and urged continued commitment to the Center’s work. Alexander’s reflection presents the institution’s own perspective on carrying that work forward.

There is not enough verified evidence here to name specific celebrities or quote their reactions. That limitation does not mean no entertainers or other public figures responded; it means their statements should not be attributed without direct, reliable sourcing. The documented record summarized above supports tributes from politicians, world leaders, Carter’s family, the Carter Center, and members of the public.

What the tributes can—and cannot—tell us
Official statements, funeral remarks, and condolence messages show how many people and institutions chose to remember Carter, particularly for service, peacebuilding, and humanitarian work. They are evidence of public commemoration, not a verdict on every part of his presidency or post-presidential record. For a documentary viewer, the most revealing contrast is between the formal language of national mourning and the long-running work of the Carter Center, where the legacy is expressed through programs as well as words.
