Jimmy Kimmel’s response to Donald Trump’s criticism of Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl LX halftime show was both a joke at Trump’s expense and an argument against turning entertainment into a political loyalty test. Kimmel also rejected the idea that viewers had to choose between Bad Bunny and Kid Rock, who headlined Turning Point USA’s competing program.
What Trump said about Bad Bunny’s performance
Bad Bunny performed at Super Bowl LX on February 8, 2026, in Santa Clara, California. The set was predominantly in Spanish and incorporated Puerto Rican cultural references. During the event, Trump condemned the performance in a social-media post, calling it “absolutely terrible, one of the worst, EVER” and an “affront to the Greatness of America.” He also wrote, “Nobody understands a word this guy is saying,” and criticized the dancing.

Those were Trump’s stated objections; they were not a neutral description of what the show meant. The performance included hit songs, a sugar-cane-field setting, a piragua stand and a closing sequence naming countries across the Americas. The Associated Press described unity as a theme and noted references to Puerto Rico, including its power outages and questions of sovereignty. Symbols and staging can invite different interpretations, so they should not be treated as proof of one settled political message.

He mocked the backlash
On his Monday-night show, Kimmel ridiculed Trump’s indignation. “Bad Bunny got a bad review from our bad president, unfortunately,” he joked. He also mocked Turning Point USA’s rival halftime program, describing it as a “disaster,” according to Fox News’ account of his remarks. These were Kimmel’s comedic judgments, not independent findings about either performance.

He resisted a forced choice
Kimmel’s broader point was that viewers should not have to treat a halftime show as a declaration of political allegiance. “This is about the fact that everything has to be something now. We have to take a side on everything,” he said. He added that people could like Bad Bunny, Kid Rock, both performers or neither.
Kimmel also defended the idea of enjoying a performance without understanding every lyric, pointing out that it took place during a football game. His response was not simply a defense of one artist against another: it challenged the expectation that watching music requires picking a side.

Why the performances became a political dispute
Turning Point USA staged an alternative halftime program featuring Kid Rock amid backlash over Bad Bunny’s Spanish-language performance and political views. The disagreement reflected several different objections—not a single, uniform conservative response—including discomfort with Spanish-language music, opposition to Bad Bunny’s politics and perceptions that the show carried a political message.
The performance’s cultural references and unity theme are distinct from a specific political statement. Some observers anticipated an overt anti-ICE message, but the Washington Post reported that no such statement materialized. It is more accurate to describe the dispute as a clash over language, cultural representation and political interpretation than to claim Bad Bunny delivered a speech or explicit anti-ICE message during the set.

What the audience figures do—and don’t—show
The Associated Press said Super Bowl halftime shows attract more than 100 million viewers in most years; that general description is not a verified count for either 2026 program. For Turning Point USA’s alternative show, AP reported roughly 5 million people watching live on YouTube at one point. It also relayed spokesperson Andrew Kolvet’s claim of roughly 10 million concurrent viewers across social platforms at one point, while noting that the organization did not provide exact figures when asked.
Those are different kinds of figures, and neither establishes a final, independently verified audience total for the alternative program. The available reporting does not supply directly comparable final audience totals for both shows, so it cannot establish a ratings winner.
