The accounts of family events are Bartel’s recollections as reported by the outlet, not independently verified findings.
What did Jimmy Bartel say about his father?
Speaking with Sarah Grynberg on the podcast A Life of Greatness, Bartel described a frightening night with his father when he was 14. PerthNow’s Zach Margolius reported Bartel’s recollection that his father had been drinking heavily and became physical with him. Bartel said the experience brought earlier memories to the surface.
“I didn’t have a great time up there with him and had a pretty average night, one night with him, which (was) pretty scary for myself. He had been heavily drinking and things like that, he got pretty physical with myself, sort of stuff that you’d put away and seen earlier, that sort of all came to the surface.”
Bartel also described an incident after his parents separated. He said his mother had an apprehended violence order (AVO) against his father and recalled that his father came to the home and threatened to take his mother unless she lifted it. This is Bartel’s account as reported by PerthNow; the report does not establish it as an independently verified legal finding.

- ALL-WEATHER MATCH BALL – Made to provide an impressive level of performance during wet-weather Aussie Rules football matches, this AFL game ball’s outer panels are manufactured from synthetic leather. This high-quality material creates an AFL game ball which will not absorb liquids, making it suitable for use on water logged pitches.
- FOAM AND COTTON BACKING – To help this ball maintain its shape and size during intense AFL matches, this ball’s outer panels are backed with multiple layers of polyester and cotton canvas. These hard-wearing components work together to ensure your AFL match ball remains within official sizing regulations.
- ELITE TEXTURE GRIP – Players will not struggle to keep a hold of this AFL match ball thanks to its elite texture grip. This textured panelling ensures the number of times players surrender possession during competitive Aussie Rules football matches is significantly reduced.
- HI-TECH LATEX BLADDER – Once inflated to an air pressure level between 9 – 10 PSI, this Aussie Rules match ball will retain air for an impressive level of time thanks to its hi-tech latex bladder. This hard-wearing component greatly reduces the number of times you need to pump this game ball up throughout the season.
- 100% HAND STITCHED – To negate the risk of potential panel separation, this AFL Football’s stitching is done by hand. This premium finish creates a tightly-bound Aussie Rules football which will maintain a consistent ball flight regardless of how many times it is used.
How has Bartel spoken about the effects of his childhood?
Bartel has spoken publicly about family violence before. In 2016, ABC News reported on his account of violence and emotional abuse in his family and his involvement in the Support a Friend campaign. In that report, Bartel reflected that children can understand their circumstances differently as they grow older: “I think as you get older you understand what it was like because when you’re younger and you’re in it that’s all you know.”
ABC Radio National’s Life Matters covered Bartel’s campaigning against domestic violence in 2017, when he was described as an ambassador for the Alannah & Madeline Foundation. These earlier reports provide context for his public advocacy; they are separate from the childhood recollections in the 2025 interview.

What is Bartel’s connection to Joel Selwood’s family?
PerthNow reported that Bartel played alongside Joel Selwood for more than 13 years. Bartel described a close, enduring connection between their families and said it had been painful to watch the Selwood family experience the deaths of Joel’s brothers, Adam and Troy. The story presents this as Bartel’s expression of concern and family closeness, rather than as a separate account from the Selwoods.
The report also described Bartel as a three-time premiership player and Brownlow medallist. It said he retired in 2016 after 305 games; those career details are stated in the context of PerthNow’s 2025 report.

Why does Bartel think a gay AFL player might hesitate to come out?
Bartel suggested that a gay male player might worry that coming out would become the defining feature of how people saw him, rather than one part of his life. He framed this as his own opinion, not as a confirmed explanation for any particular player’s choices or as insight based on personal experience.
He explicitly acknowledged that limit: “And again, that’s only an opinion of someone who’s never walked a mile in that person’s shoes.” The interview therefore reports Bartel’s speculation, not the views or circumstances of an identified player.
