After CBS announced on July 17, 2025, that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would end in May 2026, Jimmy Kimmel publicly backed Colbert and criticized the network. In an Instagram Story the next day, Kimmel wrote “Love you Stephen” and paired the message with an expletive directed at CBS. The sharp reaction was his; it did not establish why CBS made its decision.
What happened when CBS announced the cancellation?
Colbert announced on air on July 17, 2025, that the coming season would be the program’s last. CBS said the show would end in May 2026 and that the network would retire The Late Show franchise. The announcement ended a long-running late-night program, not just Colbert’s tenure as host. CBS’s announcement described the move as “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night” and said it was not related to the show’s performance or content.
What did Jimmy Kimmel say?
On July 18, ABC News reported that Kimmel shared Colbert’s announcement in an Instagram Story. He wrote “Love you Stephen” and directed an expletive at CBS. ABC characterized the post as support for Colbert and criticism of the network. ABC News’s account also described reactions from other late-night hosts.
Why did the decision become controversial?
The timing brought extra attention to CBS’s stated financial explanation. The cancellation was announced three days after Colbert criticized Paramount’s $16 million settlement with President Trump over a 60 Minutes story. The proximity led observers to question whether the settlement criticism was connected to the cancellation. The Associated Press reported that two senators publicly questioned the motive, but the timing and questions do not prove that political pressure caused CBS’s decision.

CBS’s public position was that the ending was financial and unrelated to performance or content. That is the network’s explanation, not independent confirmation of its internal deliberations. The available reporting does not establish a political cause.
What did Kimmel say near Colbert’s final episode?
Kimmel returned to the subject around Colbert’s May 2026 finale. The Daily Beast reported that he said he would watch the final episode and urged his audience to tune in to CBS for the farewell, then not watch the network again: “I hope that those of you who watch our show will also tune in to CBS for the last time. Don’t ever watch it again, but watch tomorrow night to wish Stephen and our friends at The Late Show a fond farewell.” This was Kimmel’s appeal to viewers; it does not show that CBS reversed its decision or that a boycott followed. The Daily Beast reported his remarks.
