Jessica Ridgeway disappeared on October 5, 2012, while heading to meet a schoolmate before walking to school in Westminster, Colorado. The investigation involved a statewide AMBER Alert and forensic work by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. On October 23, the mother of suspect Austin Sigg called 911 after he confessed to her; the recording was later played at a court hearing. It documented a reported confession, but it was one part of a larger investigation and legal process.
How Jessica disappeared on her way to school
On the morning of October 5, 2012, Jessica left home to meet a schoolmate before walking to school. The Associated Press reported that the meeting point was two blocks from her home; ABC News described the walk to school as about a mile. Jessica did not arrive. After learning she was absent, her mother contacted police. Contemporary court coverage identified Jessica as 10 and a fifth grader.

That evening, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was contacted to issue a statewide AMBER Alert. The agency’s 2012 annual report says its forensic services team stood by to assist. CBI 2012 Annual Report
What investigators found and how the search developed
Five days after Jessica went missing, her torso was found in a bag in an open-space park in Arvada, according to ABC News’ account of testimony at a February 2013 hearing. The report said other remains were found in a crawl space beneath Sigg’s home.

The CBI annual report says initial evidence reached its laboratory on Columbus Day. DNA and latent-print sections then worked to identify the kidnapper, alongside other CBI personnel and capabilities. The report describes team members often working 16-hour days during the case; that is the agency’s account of staff workload, not a measure of the investigation’s outcome.
Contemporaneous court reporting said a resident’s tip led investigators to Sigg and that FBI agents obtained a DNA sample on October 19. The FBI’s arrest announcement, issued October 24 with Westminster Police and the Jefferson County District Attorney, said a call the previous evening led police to a home near Ketner Lake Open Space. It also said charges would be filed in connection with a May 28 attempted abduction at Ketner Lake. FBI arrest announcement, October 24, 2012

What the reported 911 confession said
On October 23, 2012, Sigg’s mother called 911 after, according to testimony summarized by the Associated Press, he confessed to her. AP reporting quotes the recording as capturing Sigg saying: “I murdered Jessica Ridgeway. I have proof that I did it.” The call was not presented here as an independently reviewed transcript: this wording is AP’s account of audio played in court. ABC News reported a longer version of the statement, including that Sigg said he was giving himself up and would not resist. Both accounts describe the recording being played at a preliminary hearing in February 2013. AP also reported that Sigg’s mother told the dispatcher he had confessed and that Jessica’s remains were in her house. ABC News report on the court-played recording

The FBI’s October 24 announcement established that an arrest had been made and described the call that led police to the home. The more detailed words attributed to Sigg came through later court reporting about the recording, rather than the FBI announcement.

At the February 2013 preliminary hearing, prosecutors played the recording, and contemporaneous reports said a judge ordered Sigg to stand trial. The call became a striking piece of the public account because it captured a reported admission, but it did not by itself describe the full forensic investigation or resolve the case’s legal proceedings.
In November 2013, AP reported that Sigg, then 18, pleaded guilty to kidnapping, sexually assaulting and killing Jessica. The same report said he acknowledged an earlier attack on a 22-year-old jogger. That article covered the start of a sentencing hearing and does not establish the sentence imposed.
