The Los Angeles Clippers announced his death; the cause was not disclosed. West’s legacy reaches well beyond the nickname: he was an Olympic champion, an extraordinary Lakers player and a leading architect of championship teams as an executive.
Who was Jerry West?
West was a West Virginia-born guard who spent all 14 of his NBA seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, from 1960 to 1974. He was selected as an All-Star in every season and earned 12 All-NBA selections. His career bridged the Lakers’ early years in Los Angeles and the franchise’s rise to sustained championship contention.
West also won Olympic gold with the United States at the 1960 Rome Games. He was selected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame three times: as a player in 1980, as a member of the 1960 U.S. Olympic team in 2010, and as a contributor in 2024.
What made West’s Lakers career remarkable?
Big moments in the Finals
West played in nine NBA Finals and won the championship with the Lakers in 1972. His 1969 Finals MVP remains an unusual distinction: he was the first recipient of the award and, according to the Associated Press, the only player to win it while his team lost the Finals. The Lakers lost that series to Boston, but West’s performance was recognized despite the result.

Another defining play came in Game 3 of the 1970 Finals. West made a buzzer-beating shot from roughly 60 feet to tie the game and force overtime. The Lakers lost the game, but the shot became one of the best-known moments of his playing career.
Olympic gold
Before his NBA career, West helped the United States win gold at the 1960 Olympics in Rome. That achievement is distinct from his Lakers honors and is part of why his Hall of Fame record includes a separate selection for the Olympic team.

Why was Jerry West called “the Logo”?
West’s silhouette is widely identified as the model for the NBA logo, but the league has not formally confirmed that attribution. In 2024, the Associated Press reported that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver had said in 2021: “While it’s never been officially declared that the logo is Jerry West, it sure looks a lot like him.” That captures the distinction: the resemblance is broadly accepted, but it is not an official league identification.
West did not want the logo to eclipse the rest of his life in basketball. In a 2021 interview quoted by AP, he said, “I’m just part of the game,” and added, “I never wanted to be any more than that.”

What did West do for the Lakers after playing?
West’s influence continued as a coach, scout and executive. The Congressional Record’s tribute credited him with helping construct the Lakers’ 1980s Showtime teams. AP also reported that West drafted Magic Johnson and James Worthy, orchestrated the Kobe Bryant trade and signed Shaquille O’Neal, helping shape the later championship core. These achievements were part of his front-office career, separate from the 1972 title he won as a player.
West also held executive roles with the Memphis Grizzlies, Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Clippers. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, in remarks reported by AP, credited West’s executive tenure with eight championship teams. That figure describes teams associated with his executive work, not eight titles he won on court as a Laker.

What is known about his death?
The Clippers announced West’s death on June 12, 2024, and said his wife, Karen, was by his side. The announcement did not disclose a cause of death, and AP and UPI reported that none had been provided. No cause should be inferred from earlier accounts of his health or personal life.
A life larger than a silhouette
West’s public legacy holds several roles together: an Olympic champion, a perennial All-Star, a Finals MVP in defeat, a Lakers champion and an executive whose decisions helped shape multiple eras of the league. The logo remains the shorthand most people recognize, but it is only one part of a career that spanned more than six decades in basketball.
