Jentry Chau vs. the Underworld can be compared to Buffy the Vampire Slayer because both center a young woman facing supernatural threats alongside the pressures of adolescence. But “remixes Buffy” works as a critical analogy, not a claim that the series adapts Buffy or that its creator cited the show as an influence. Jentry’s Chinese-American identity, family history and Chinese mythological world give the Netflix series its own center of gravity.
What is Jentry Chau vs. the Underworld about?
Netflix’s series follows Jentry Chau, a Chinese-American teenager living in a small Texas town. A demon king comes after the supernatural powers she has spent her life repressing. With help from her weapons-expert great-aunt and a millennia-old jiangshi, Jentry confronts monsters while trying to navigate high school. Netflix announced the series premiere for December 5, 2024. That combination supplies the clearest basis for the Buffy comparison: a young heroine’s ordinary social world keeps intersecting with a supernatural fight. The resemblance is about premise and structure, not proof of a direct creative lineage.
Is Jentry Chau like Buffy the Vampire Slayer?
As an analogy, yes: both stories put a young woman under pressure from supernatural enemies while adolescence remains part of the plot. That frame helps explain why the shows may appeal to viewers who like teen life and monster-fighting in the same story. It should not be stretched into a claim that Jentry is a Buffy remake, adaptation or officially connected series.

Creator Echo Wu’s documented comments point to a broader, distinct set of inspirations. In a June 2025 interview, she discussed growing up in Carrollton, Texas, wanting to combine teen romance, horror and action, and named Euphoria and Jujutsu Kaisen as reference points. She did not name Buffy as an influence in that interview. Wu’s interview also describes the personal and cultural roots she brought to the series.
What sets Jentry’s story apart?
Identity is part of the supernatural conflict
Jentry is not simply learning how to defeat monsters; she is reckoning with powers she has tried to suppress and deciding what they mean to her. Wu described the tension as a question of whether Jentry’s abilities feel like part of herself or like a curse. In creator comments reproduced by Netflix, Wu put the idea this way: “Sometimes finding your self-identity is coming face-to-face with your own demons.” She also observed, “If a teenager had superpowers, I don’t think she would take it very well.” Netflix’s coverage attributes both comments to Wu.
Family history and Chinese mythology shape the world
Wu connected the series’ supernatural setting to Chinese mythology and to her childhood fascination with the Monkey King in Journey to the West. She said the production worked with a cultural consultant to help build out that world. The presence of a jiangshi and a demon king, or mogui, is part of the show’s mythological vocabulary; those elements should not be mistaken for a complete account of the traditions they draw on. Wu also identified self-autonomy, generational trauma and personal identity as themes that mattered to her. Her interview discusses these influences and themes.
These details make the Buffy comparison most useful as an entry point. The shared teen-heroine setup does not erase the cultural, familial and personal questions that distinguish Jentry’s story.

Film Music Reporter reported in December 2024 that a digital album was due from Netflix Music on December 5 and that a vinyl edition was in the works and available to order at that time. Has Netflix renewed Jentry Chau vs. the Underworld for season 2?
As of a February 26, 2026 report, What’s on Netflix said Netflix had not officially renewed the series and that Wu had not confirmed a cancellation.
