Netflix’s Atlas trailer sets up a science-fiction action story about Atlas Shepherd (Jennifer Lopez), an analyst who distrusts artificial intelligence but must rely on it during a mission to capture renegade AI Harlan (Simu Liu). When the mission goes wrong, that uneasy dependence becomes central to her effort to save humanity.
What happens in the Atlas trailer?
Netflix’s trailer introduces Atlas Shepherd as a brilliant, misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of AI. She joins a mission to capture a renegade robot connected to her past. After the plan goes awry, she has to trust an AI system if she is to save humanity. That is the trailer’s central tension: Atlas is sent after an AI threat, yet survival may depend on working with AI.

The trailer’s setup is distinct from the fuller backstory Netflix later provided. Netflix identifies Harlan as the AI the mission seeks to capture; Atlas’s reluctant reliance is on a separate AI system. The trailer premise does not mean Harlan is the system she must trust.
Who is Harlan, the AI played by Simu Liu?
Netflix’s June 4, 2024 Tudum feature describes Harlan as the first AI terrorist and, in a twisted sense, Atlas’s AI “brother.” Atlas’s scientist mother created him to serve humanity, but he later betrayed it. Netflix says Harlan has spent 28 years on the planet GR39. Simu Liu described the character this way: “He was created by a brilliant scientist to be a protector of mankind, but unfortunately, you know how some things go.”

What do the filmmakers and cast say about the story?
Lopez described Atlas as someone who “doesn’t trust anybody and doesn’t want anything to do with AI.” Director Brad Peyton said, “The heart of Atlas is really about trust and how difficult it is to trust people.” Lopez also called it “a big sci-fi action movie” whose core is “a story of friendship — and a love story, in a way.” These are the filmmakers’ descriptions of the film’s themes, not claims about real-world AI.
Peyton directed the film, written by Leo Sardarian and Aron Eli Coleite. Sterling K. Brown plays Colonel Banks, the mission commander.
