Jennifer Lopez received a standing ovation after the world premiere of Kiss of the Spider Woman at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. The screening took place at the Eccles Theater in Park City, Utah, on January 26; audiences also applauded during her musical numbers, according to The Associated Press.
What happened at the Sundance premiere
The ovation followed the film’s Sundance world premiere on January 26, 2025. The Associated Press reported that applause also broke out during Lopez’s song-and-dance numbers. At the festival Q&A, Lopez said, “I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life,” as reported by the AP, which also said she was moved by the audience’s response.
Why this was not the New York premiere
Kiss of the Spider Woman had a separate New York premiere months later. PAPER reported that the New York debut took place on October 6, 2025, at The Shed in Hudson Yards, followed by a screening and an after-party at the Crane Club. That account concerns the New York event; the reported standing ovation was at Sundance.

Lopez’s role in the film
Directed by Bill Condon, the 2025 film centers on two prisoners, Luis Molina and Valentín Arregui. Sony Pictures’ official synopsis describes their relationship developing as Molina recounts a favorite movie. Lopez plays Ingrid Luna, the screen diva in the musical fantasy within that story. The film’s narrative traces back to Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel, which has also been adapted for stage and screen, according to the AP.
